Title: Boot Floppy's And CD's
Post by: cjbriare on August 10, 2007, 12:33:16 PM
Once again, Windows XP crashed and burned on me again.
(I still think Win 2000 is more reliable.)

Anyhoo, I thought it would be cool to put NeXTSTEP on it.
but... can someone please awnser the following for me?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Will NeXTSTEP run on a 630 MHz Pentium 3?

2. I downloaded the nextstep install cd iso over a torrent, how do i burn the contents of an image to a real CD? (on a Mac or PC.)

3.  I download the boot floppies from Apple, how do I put those images to real floppies? (mac or pc.)

4. What format should i use for my hard drive for NeXTSTEP? (NTFS, FAT32, FAT16)

5. Is any old PS/2 Microsoft Mouse/IBM keyboard usable?

I probably shouldn't answer this but I will....

1) Probably...  But then it's all touch and go.  You'll want to check what drivers are available, and how much time you want to sink into this...

2) The cdrom image is FFS, not ISO9660, which means that normal computers will be unable to read the disk.  However I have burnt using cdrecord under windows (the cli one).  Of course once it's burnt, you cannot read it.  Check your software for burning an ISO image which is the raw image...

3) I use rawrite, however it's a MS-DOS program, so you'll need to rename the Apple files in 8.3 format... (Boot, core&beta).

4) this will probably be the hard one, as NeXTSTEP was written in the days of insanely small disks.. It won't like seeing a big disk.. You'll probably have some issues here.  You can experiment with various geometry settings, and manually ignoreing the majority of your cylinders.. The maximum size of a filesystem is 2 gigabytes. (It's a signed 32bit integer thing).  Remember back then a 500megabyte disk was a 'big thing, like 5 1/4" Full Height, and cost a FORTUNE).  This will probably be your biggest stumbling block.

5) Yes.  I've had the best luck with PS/2 mice/keyboards, USB will *NOT* work, outside of the boot loading, even when in BIOS mode.

I think you'll be happier with running it under emulation (VMWare or Qemu).  Check around the virtualization area for my install guide to give you an idea how involved it is....

Also this is the best technology of 1994... I suspect you'll be *very* disapointed...

I use my NeXT cube as an IRC client.

Really...

Do the virtualization route 1st!!!!!!!!!!  Really!

Anyways good luck!

Thanks anyway. although, i downloaded the fix for the mouse being jumpy, but it looks like a non-windows app. Do i have to install it to nextstep while emulating or what?

You can read the install process here:

I've built win32 exe's here:

http://www.vaxenrule.com/Shared%20Documents/qemu-0.9.0-PatchedforNeXTSTEP.zip

And the video driver is here:

http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Software/NEXTSTEP/Drivers/nextstep_3.3/released/CL_GD5434.pkg.compressed

Looking at the date I think I'll have to re-write this to include the networking & Video support.. but this is enough to bootstrap you.

Isn't it time to step away from it?

I really can't, for the life of me, figure out what's the appeal to this sadomachoistic bondage between users and Windows!?

But I digress... Here are some additions to neozeed's tips for getting NeXTSTEP running:

Quote from: "neozeed"3) I use rawrite, however it's a MS-DOS program, so you'll need to rename the Apple files in 8.3 format... (Boot, core&beta).

There's also a Windoze version fo RawWrite for the entrapped ones...

I beg to differ!!! :)

For example, try Interface Builder - you can write a quite functional GUI application with zero lines of code. That's hard to do even today ( unless you're got yourself a Mac, har har har :) )

Oh, but so much more could be done! (Especially on a Pentium 3 machine...)

I second the advice.

Yeah I need to update it with networking, and Video.  Especially now that it works!
