Well I finally installed a White Box.  Here is the thing we have all this company data in Oracle7.  I thought it would be fun trying to do some reports & modeling via NS.

So I installed Nextstep 3.3 & EOF 1.1 and patched the OS & Dev kit.  As far as I'm aware there are no patches for EOF 1.1

Ok Now I start the modeler and try to connect.....

It seems to error out WAY too quick.

I put the ip address in teh ServerID, the hostname in the host machine field, and scott/tiger in for user id & password.  Yes our database really has scott/tiger enabled!

Anyways it just pops back. I suspect it's not doing anything.

From what I can tell the answer is in "NeXTanswer #1897"  But I think they are all destroyed...

Any help here would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

I placed a copy of NeXTanswers in the archives.  It's a fattie download. :)

Aw man *THANKS* I was looking all OVER for that!

The obnoxious bastard in me says we should move the forum into a EOF / Oracle application so that it's NeXT friendly... Of course then it cut's out google & mortal users.. .

I got connected to the database!

The nice thing was:

For SQL*Net V2 style connection:
Server ID: < < This is the aliasname in /etc/tnsnames.ora for SQL*Net V2.1;
it could be the ORACLE_SID for SQL*Net V2.0> >
Host Machine: < < MUST BE BLANK> >
User Name: some_username
Password: some_password

Yeah... Nice.. must be blank.... Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Oh well the boss saw what I've mined so far, and it looks like we could be getting an Xserve!
