Title: TurboCube powerup debugging
Post by: cubist on September 20, 2007, 11:43:48 PM
TurboCube stopped powering up recently and I had to do some debugging.  After the usual battery/cables/seating fixes did nothing, I went in a bit deeper.  What I saw was that the ONOFF signal (pin 6 of the soundbox connector) wasn't really going high in the rest state (.2V give or take).  I have a backup board so I put that on the 'bench' and it behaved correctly:  3+ V at rest pulled to zero when the power button is hit.  Swapped it in, cube booted but now I want to fix the failed board.  Powerup is managed by the RTC (1185 part, I think) and I suspect the problem will be in this area.  Wanted to ask if anyone has ever looked at a similar issue and has any suggestions....

I haven't seen that particular problem but if it would be any help, there are Turbo Cube schematics in the archives here.

Turbo Cube motherboards are hard to come by so I hope you can get it running again.

Yep, I've had the schematics for awhile.  Definitely useful but not without
error (one of the connector pins is wrong).  It's the old Motorola
XCCS1850DW (aka MCCS1850DW) part that I'm worried about.  Can't
find datasheets (email in to Freescale about that one).  I might have to
start hitting the local fleas/hamfests to pick up an old Moto book.

I did reverse engineer the power supply while I was in there.  I have
about ten pages of hand-drawn schematics to capture someday...

I have to say, Freescale came through, and quickly.  They dug up
a 16-page datasheet on the old Moto part.  Perhaps worth submitting
to the files section?

That would be great.  I started a datasheet section recently but there's not much in there yet.

If you could e-mail a copy to admin <at> nextcomputers <dot> org it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
