Where To Get OPENSTEP

I have been looking for a openstep cd and i can't find one not even a iso download.
Where can i get a copy or iso of OPENSTEP CD?

You buy it on ebay.
Chances are that nobody even bothered to rip and produce a torrent of any NeXT media.
We also frown on people downloading it.

I have looked on ebay all i can find is 2 CD Set 750 working NeXT Applications
no installation cds

Did OPENSTEP ever ship on any black hardware from the factory?  I had thought it was released after NeXT had stopped making hardware.

That's correct.  NEXTSTEP 3.3 and OPENSTEP 4.2 both shipped after NeXT ceased hardware production.

I think the fact that Apple continued to sell and support products which are generally thought of as NeXT software through the end of 2000 shows that your statement is completely erroneous. People continued to care about this software long after Apple bought NeXT. And Apple continued to push NeXT products until Apple was able to bring comparable products to market (the release of Rhapsody 5.3 allowed the use of WebObjects and Enterprise Objects on Apple hardware, and WebObjects 4.x allowed the use of OpenStep Enterprise applications to be used on other platforms while running on an Apple product).

If no one cared about NeXT software, why did Apple agree to let Black Hole Inc. continue to make the product available? You can buy legally licensed (with restrictions*) versions of NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP today... more than 10 years after OPENSTEP 4.2 was released.

Further, if this was software nobody cares about, then why are there still people using it today? Why is there this forum for you to ask questions? It seems to me that a lot of people cared about this software long after Apple bought NeXT... including you, since you are here asking about it.

I'm looking to buy a set of openstep CDs.

I recently purchased a set of openstep cds on eBay from BlackHole computers and they never replied and never shipped.

All email to blackhole bounces and they do not answer the phone.

It looks like blackhole has gone down the black hole.

So does anybody know where to obtain a set of openstep cds.

   I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to have a copy of that.  :D After shutting down my systems for close to a year, I've truly enjoyed using all of them again since I powered everything back up several months ago.  I really missed the elegance of NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP.  Since then, whenever I get the chance, I'll sit down in front of one my systems and enjoy using them.  Am I one of the few people who actually like the old NON-ADB keyboards on the NeXT systems?  I always hated the mouse, but I love the keyboard.  Kinda like the keyboards for the original Mac's upto the Mac Plus.   I hated it when Apple first moved to ADB keyboards.  Oh well,  atleast I still 3 more slabs as backups.  Take care & welcome to the forums!

I have recently bought the new slim keyboard from Apple currently running on my Debian Linux box, but I would pay twice if I could get a NeXTStation keyboard [in black of course] from Apple.

Perhaps if I had not left during the chaos I could have been more of a voice for the NeXT crowd. I still find Apple has missed the boat on their goals for growing their developer base and user base.

I'm not an advocate for cloning as it did cannibalize sales, but this current product matrix has a few gaping holes.

One of the current holes I see in the Industry is the pathetic prices for a quality S-IPS display panel.

I've been wanting to buy either a 26in monitor or a couple 22 in monitors and I'm stuck with CRT because the color spectrum is weak for anything under $600 or the quality of text is weak all due to cheap LCD display technology in mass production.

These TN+Film and MVA quality panels are junk. The S-IPS are massively expensive and the PVA panels compromise quality of color.

The Cinema displays are S-IPS but they aren't competitively priced to take out the competition.

I could discuss the Enterprise but Steve gave up on that goal long ago.

Why? I worked at NeXT Engineering. That Openstep 4.0 Prerelease 1 is MECCA.

It was during the Prerelease 2 cycle that Steve was introduced WebObjects 1.0 and he canceled focus on Openstep and insisted on keeping the NS 3.3 Interface.

Steve Neeroff [sp?] took over the UI Design when Keith Ohlfs left NeXT after NS 3.3 was released.

Go to Apple Engineering and ask to see the systems lineup of NeXTSTEP to OS X history. There will be a Black NeXTStation dual PPC Brick that was never released running NS 3.3 and at one time a version of MECCA running on a DEC PC and the ObjectStation 41

I want copies of the beta... :) Be fun to play with.

Wow so the PPC build was way further along?  It's no wonder Apple jumped on NeXT!  It's such a shame in a way the lenght of development from OSX 1.0 to OSX 10..... But then the wait was well worth it.

I've heard about the RISC system running NS 3.3 as well.  Besides getting a copy of the Beta above, I personally would love to have a copy of OPENSTEP 4.2 for the HP Gecko's.  I've seen several references to it over the years.  I know it was never released officially.  But if you try to boot on OPENSTEP 4.2 User cd, the HP boot loader is still there.   :D

Besides using an x86 system because of speed, I think the HP's make the next best NEXTSTEP system.  They're nice.  I love my 100 Mhz Gecko, along w/ my 110 Mhz Sparc 5, & 2 running NeXT Turbo Slabs. 1 Mono/1 Color.  :wink:   Sure there's quite a few things that weren't published for HPPA/Sparc, but I've re-compiled quite a few apps for them if the source was available.   Each system has their own quirks.  I'll keep them going till they stop working. There is no support for Openstep, NeXTSTEP nor beta software in MECCA.

Apple won't be on your bum if this is for individual non-resale use.

Note: Seeing as how some of us at NeXT were royally "********ed" during the merger I'm not personally in a mood to be NDA loving seeing as my NDA long ago expired and the lack of actual salary reviews that never came for nearly 2 years ended my desire to be sheepish towards the inner sanctum.

It's taken 11 years since our last NeXT meeting in Redwood City, CA and the OS is still not where Steve, Avie, Peter, Ali, Scott Forstall and others discussed during this meeting and subsequent meetings.

If I have to see another "innovative" pocket video player as the next wave of Apple hardware I think I'll start a blog on how reinventing the wheel has become the norm inside Apple versus moving the markets forward.

We were to have an SMP kernel with a minimum 32 CPUs supported shortly after the merger.

I think someone was on some wonderful Bullshit when they hyped this distortion up.

I wish they had kept with a simple UI like NS/OS have and all. OSX is a weird bastardization of the OS :(

Let me just say that I never saw so many whiny brats working for such a talented company as Apple during those painful days on how the Operating System would look.

We tried to get Keith Ohlfs back but he was tied to heavy stock options at Microsoft during the WebTV buyout and couldn't just let that go.

Tim Wasko did a great job to pick up the slack, but there is only one Keith Olhfs.

Something else that made Keith so unique was that he was able to get people to work around his vision and not have fight after fight over icons.

You'd have to have been there in the Restaurant the day Steve settled upon the "Think Different" campaign.

You had people bitching about it not being grammatically correct and ignoring the vision behind it.

He compared it to Nike's Just Do It, or the Dairy Industry Got Milk campaign [and had to mock it by noting that Milk was never very healthy for you and he uses orange juice in his morning granola, by I digress].

Pardon me for being out of the circle but what's going on?
Someone mentioned the word beta and the rest flew over my head.

You know, one thing I hadn't even thought about while discussing OPENSTEP 4.2 for the Gecko,  if you have the developer, that means I should be able to get a newer compiler to work for NEXTSTEP 3.3!  :D  Even 2.7.2.1 would be better than 2.5.8 for quite a few things.  Like OpenSSH being a major one.  I can compile 4.7p1 on OPENSTEP, but it don't like 2.5.8 on NEXTSTEP.  That'd make life a little easier.  Ok, now I'm really interested.  8)

so where are you storing these?

I've uploaded 4.0Pr1 User.

I'm responding to others who want to host. It's just a matter of bandwidth and time for them to be uploaded.

    I'll shoot you an email tomorrow.  Over the years, I've been offered countless jobs working on OPENSTEP.  But I didn't think it be anything long term so I eventually became a Sun SSE.  I'm sure life would be alot different, but I enjoy my job for the most part & do enjoy Solaris besides working w/ NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP/Mac OSX.  :D  I can just imagine how fun it would've been working @ NeXT back in the hey day.  I probably would've never left the office. rofl.

The person who contacted me offered to host them. I won't host them but I most certainly have no problem getting them out to people who will, in hopes that some sort of permutation of host space would emerge and thus one would have half a dozen places to get them.

  Been a while.  Works been extremely busy the last few months.  Sorry!  I wanted to say something though about "my download restrictions."  Remember I host the sftp server & web server on my own systems.  While people are almost always sucking everything off the sftp/web server, I have to try to work at the same time.  I need my bandwidth like everyone else!  If someone has a problem w/ the bandwidth caps on the sftp server, I hate to tell ya, but TOUGH!  The only thing I've asked of people is show some restraint & not try to download everything all in one or two sessions, yet people continue to try to do it anyway.  I know several folks have got to have complete mirrors of the sftp & the web server.  I keep logs, I know people frequently mirror them both.  If someone else is willing to host them, go ahead, I don't have any problems w/ that. :-)
   If someone's requested access to the sftp server & I haven't gotten back to you, sorry  I'm not ignoring you.  I've been busy working.  I'll get back to you when I have time.  
    I think most people here know I love my NeXT systems as much as anyone else here.  I love to still try to compile stuff when I get a chance and I love visiting these forums, but if I get more emails w/ complaints about the sftp server.  I'll close it for good.  Sorry, I just don't have time to deal w/ the hassle.  I hope everyone is doing well!  Take care.
     Marc, glad to see ya back on the forums btw. :-)  I'd forgot to pm you but I did have a few people state that the MECCA floppy images are corrupt.  If/When you have time could you re-upload them.  If you drop them in the incoming folder, I'll move them over to where they belong.  Thanks & I apologize for my tone.

Just a follow upto my previous post.  If I offended anyone, I apologize.  My comments weren't directed any one person.  Sometimes I get anywhere from 1-30 requests a week for access to the my server.  I don't mind giving access, etc.  Everyone here know's I've never minded hosting stuff for the forums w/ in reason like not hosting Helf's 4+ gig DVD image any longer.  Sorry helf! ;-)  It's one of the ways I try to give back to this small great community.  We all love our NeXT systems! ;-)  I do however have a problem w/ someone complaining about what I do/don't provide.  It wasn't posted here on the forums, it was in some emails I had received.  I just want to make sure it was clear.  I won't mention names/nicks.  I really don't think they were member of the forums, just a passer by.  The caps on bandwidth, the limit of one connection per IP, & the max of three people connected to the sftp server stay in place.  Other than that, I place no restriction on what's uploaded/downloaded.  Take care!

Hi Kevin,
   The username/password I sent you were correct.  If you're having a problem w/ Cyberduck, under the GENERAL settings, make sure you have the setting for Transfer Files: to Use browser connection instead of Open New Connection.  That should solve your problems.  You're limited to 1 connection per IP, so you can't "open a new connection."  Let me know if that takes care of it.  Take care.

Hey everyone, as promised, here are the two openstep CDs. The User archive contains both the ISO and the floppy images required for booting.

The link will change as it's a temporary location - I just wanted to get them back up as quick as I could since Marc went out of his way for me.

The NS33 CDs will follow as will preinstalled VMWare Fusion environments of each.

For now, I'd appreciate if the the links weren't shared beyond this forum (I can't set up redirects for when the location is final since I don't own amazonaws.com) but I won't do anything if you do.

no.. amazon likely had a little hiccup is all.. whatever it was, it looks resolved - i'm able to start a download on my end.

files are there right now (3:24pm est).  I grabbed them and can provide if you need.

Well if someone else can supply them I would appreciate it as the downloads keep freezing and failing on me in the same place.

I could make a torrent, would that work?  I am also talking to some friends that have servers running to see if they could be arsed to help.  My server currently isn't on a network :S

Any chance I could get my hands on OPENSTEP Enterprise (I.e. For Windows NT)?  I read somewhere that it works in Windows 2000 and Vista too!

I am in the process of sorting all my old Next stuff and think I may have a copy of Openstep Enterprise.  I will let you know in a day or two.

Since you're at it, OS4.2 for Sun/Sparc USER and DEV would also be welcome... I'm scavenging for a SPARCstation 5 or 10, whichever comes my way!

edit: nevermind... didn't know that the OS4.2 media, all platforms have been combined into a single installation CD with tri-fat binaries (IIRC, HP-PA was dropped as a platform for OPENSTEP).

Found the cd of openstep enterprise.  email me your address and I can mail it to you.  i could also see if I can make an image of it and put it up on my idisk.

I'm starting to be interested by this system as well as the NextStep 3.3 and so I found this board which now gives me a chance to talk about that :)

I took a look on Ebay but no OpenStep CDs to sell at all.

I've noticed I've been following a lot of dead links and a lot of dead torrents in my hunt for software! :) Would anyone like me to open up an FTP server with gobs of storage space to let people upload copies of software? That way, i'd also be able to seed the torrents off of it ....
