I'd like to buy a Sun box to run NEXTSTEP 3.3 on.  I know very little about them.  Any suggestions on which model to get?

no hypersparc at all? poop, guess ill have to keep mine supersparc if I plan on running nextstep them...

I believe the sparcstation 20 was the last sparc system that nextstep/openstep supported.

As far as I understand,NS/OS only supports one processor on Sparc.  It will install and work fine, but basically it will just ignore the other processor.

The two "stickie" threads in this section of the forum from crimsonRE give a very comprehensive look at the options, and tips on how to run NS/OS on Sparc.  In my experience running it on SS5's, NS3.3 runs faster than OS4.2 does.  It is not a great difference, but it is enough to be noticeable.  Now that I have enough "black" hardware, I do not run NS/OS on my Sparc machines much.

My recommendation is the SS20, with a VSIMM. Preferably an 8MB version, that way you can run at 1280x1024, making the use of an LCD much easier. (just need a 13w3 -> VGA adapter then). Obviously, the fastest SuperSPARC CPU you can get is recommended, along with as much RAM as you can get. NS/OS aren't nearly as RAM-hungry as Linux or Solaris would be, but more is always better.

The biggest thing you can do to enhance performance, IMHO, is to use 7200 or 10000 RPM disks. They run fairly hot, but the performance difference is huge.

Another tip - NS/OS look funny in 8-bit color, so if you have a cg6 (GX/TGX), use the greyscale mode.
