Okay, so I finally found a video card for my SS1+ because when I got it came with none and could only be run through a console. Anyways, no matter what slots it's plugged in to, if it's in the system at all the system will not even give me a beep. It turns on, the front LED comes on for a moment and then goes out and aside from the drives and the fan the system is silent. I don't even get anything over the console. Removing the card however fixes the problem but the strange thing is that I know this card works. What's going on?

Sounds like a grouding fault or a short of some sort. I've had PCs do that with bad PCI/AGP cards installed. OR, is could be a weak PSU. Having that card in the machine could be too much draw on the PSU. Tried unplugging power to a HDD or such and seeing what happens?

I disconnected both scsi drives and the floppy drive and the system still didn't respond (no blinking light, no beep, no terminal).
The TGX card has chips that go slightly warm over time. so if there is a ground short than it's not affecting the whole card.

I assume you've done this already... but I would check the SBus connector for bent/smashed pins, particularly in the very corners.

Pins are in good shape.

this is probably a dumb question... i don't know a lot about sparcs..

Would that card work in my SS20? if it would, you could mail it to me and I could try it out in my machine and see if the card works or not.

It's really not worth it.
The last person who had it, the sysop of nekochan (http://www.nekochan.net), said that he had not used it in years so he didn't know personally if it worked. If this one is dead it's no loss as he is offering to send another card and personally I still need to polish up on my command line.

Pentium,
Nekochan is a great guy.  Years ago, we used to be in the Air Force together.  He's a hardcore Apple/SGI guy.     He had a Turbo NeXT Slab back then also.  I always tried to get him to use it more, but he prefered  his SGI.  We were always messing w/ stuff.  Small world. hehe.  BTW, if he don't have a card that works, drop me an email.  I've got a few TGX cards laying around.  NeXT time you chat w/ Pete, ask him about the "mad haxor" of Seymour-Johnson.  He should remember him.  It's a guy we used to know.  He'll have some funny stories about him.  8)   Take care.

No kidding - I still can't believe how I first met kb7sqi. I was chatting in comp.sys.next and came to the realization that the fellow I was corresponding with was not only local, but had the same job (not just in the Air Force - he had the exact same job as me) and was currently about 25ft away (he was in the building next door) :) That just blew my mind - there are probably better odds at winning the lottery.

Hey, I even found the original thread (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.next.marketplace/browse_thread/thread/ba5c27d5530914c9/c9990821afd24677).

Hey nekonoko!  It is a small world.     The funny thing is, I was going to sell that slab, but yet I still have it today along w/ 3 other slabs.  Once I found out you were local I ended up keeping the slab and parting w/ the Cube eventually.    I kept the slab because of all the nights I spent working on it.  I'd spend hours trying to get more & more *nix stuff working.  You know I still have that Quadra 950 running AU/X also!  8)

I remember the first time I walked into your place & saw all your stuff.  It was like we were supposed to meet.  I was so impressed w/ your SGI, Sun 3/80 and all the other stuff you had running on your network.  We quickly became good friends from there on out.  Memories of the old days.  Anyway, it was good to chat yesterday after all these years.  Keep in touch.

Figured it out.
The PROM is too old and the system is just rejecting it. It works fine in my IPC though.
