Title: Looking for an ANS (Apple Network Server)
Post by: Jenne on November 01, 2007, 12:43:56 AM
Hello again.

I know this is no NeXT-machine but as long as this part of the forum not only deals with that kind of hardware I'm leaving this search topic here. I'm looking for an Apple Network Server (ANS), more information about that machine can be found here:

http://www.erik.co.uk/ans/

Note: this is NOT an Apple Workgroup Server! In fact this the only machine I know of for wich Apple used an "external" OS: AIX 4.x.x from IBM. So if anybody in here has one willing to sell or notices one of those machines somewhere online or in a dealer's shop please let me know. Thanks in advance!

J

Ahh, the ANS, one of the oddest pieces of hardware that Apple ever made during the modern Mac era, and I'm pretty sure their last box that didn't run MacOS... I've only seen one in person before, and I'd like to add one to the collection someday. Good luck.

Wasn't it some one off version of AIX.. probably something PReP-afied...  That build of AIX will probably run on all kinds of PowerPC boxes..

But then I'm just guessing.

Well you live across the pond but I know someone in Texas who is willing to give one away for the price of shipping. They weigh up to 90 pounds.

Hmm.... I already feared this will be no easy job ;-)

I would be really interested in that machine from Texas, maybe You can help me getting a contact to that seller?

J

P.S.: I will get myself some tranquilizers before getting a heart attack about the shipping price :D

It was indeed AIX, no modified version of it and as far as I know it won´t work with any PPC Macs at all - just these ANS boxes.

I saw someone give their left testicle to ship an Onyx2 from the US to somewhere in france. His wife was not happy.

I' ll contact thim and see what can be done. It havs a dodgy power supply but otherwise it's complete in every way (even has the DAT drive and I think the keys).
Yep, the ANS used something like AIX 3.1 or something but there's a site somewhere on the web that you can download almost all the manuals for the system.

I live in Texas so shipping cost isn't an issue for me.  Can you forward the contact info of the ANS owner to me?

What about waiting if I want to pay these costs and THEN asking for the contact information? Wouldn't that be the correct way?

Then there is the possibility that the seller may not want the hassle of palletizing, packing and documenting a large heavy machine for international shipment.

That has been the situation that I have encountered several times before.  Contact the owner and see what his preference is?

And what about the hassle I had to be the first one in here to ask for a machine like this? What You just did is what call "impolite". If You would have been as interested in a machine like this before as I stated by posting this article in here, I will have to ask myself why You waited so long until someone from overseas got this idea for asking for a machine like this one in a forum like this one.

I thought this place is a bit different from eBay. You just taught me the opposite.

Jenne, you asked first so I would assume that the person who has the contact info will give you first crack at it.  That is the way it should be.  I would like a chance at the machine if you choose not to pay the freight or if the seller chooses not to ship internationally.

I have asked for an ANS before on the old NeXT forums but that post is long gone in the crashes/hacks that occurred.

Maybe you need that tranquilizer you mentioned a bit early?  People it's only old computers, get outside and enjoy the sunshine.  Don't take every thing so seriously.

This my last response on this subject.

If the shipping costs (or what costs ever) are too high for me, I may think about posting that instance here. But I would NEVER forward ANY personal information ANYWHERE, I'm still somewhat looking on privacy.

You didn't write "if costs are too high get in contact with me", You wrote: effords in sending this machine to me are not as difficult as sending it to J so get in contact to me.

This is a tiny difference in written words but quite a large one in meaning.

If You don't see it that way better think about choosing the right words to be written.

We were talking about that in fact.
It was going to cost me $400+ to get it to me and customs was not on our side.

I'm waiting for an email from him so I'll see what we get.

I've emailed him so we'll see what we can work out.  At worse it will be a drive of several hundred miles to pickup.  I guess the furtherest point in Texas from me is about a 11-12 hour drive @ 70mph - not that any  Texan ever drives the speed limit.   :D

I will publicly state that if at any time I decide not to keep the ANS, I will post it here first for the group.

I won't write what I'm thinking about all this now but this has definetly been the last time I've been posting a request like this in here.

As it turns out, it's only 80 miles from where the server is located to my house.  We've made arrangements to meet next Saturday for a pickup.

Picked up the ANS today.  It was 180 mile round trip to pick it up.  It won't power up, more precisely, it will power up for a second then it drops offline again.  Classic symptoms of a short someplace internal.

I only had a few minutes to work on it today and plan to try some more Monday afternoon.  I'll try to get some pics then too.

I'm trying.  Parts seem to be in somewhat short supply for this one.

Wait a second!
He did tell me that the power supply was acting up.
Pull it out and give it a good look. It could be something as simple as dried out caps.

Funny I have one of these sitting around for awhile now but never got around to getting the OS to run on it.

As far as I know the original OS is supposed to be quite difficult to handle. The few owning one of those computers often moved oder to some NetBSD distribution...

If you could even find the version of AIX it required you might of been fine but I hear that yellowdog was one of the first Linux releases for the ANS.
Title: any luck with that ANS of yours?

I might be able to give you some advice and help you get it running.
I have a couple of them running the original OS...
