I know it doesn't work...
read so, and found out so first hand...

but...

Does anyone here actually know -why- OPENSTEP doesn't run under vpc 7 and higher?

I *think* it has something to do with the virtual IDE controller.... the kernel boot's but then it freaks out accessing the CD to boot... and it doesn't mount root correclty if you use a disk image from a copy of VPC that did work...

Wasn't it 2004 with no service pack worked?  I forget it was so long ago that I've used VPC with nextstep/openstep.

I remember running a copy of nexstep on the first version of MS Virtual server... I think that was sync'd to the un servicepacked virtualpc 2004...

But for now I use qemu... patched of course!

so Virtual PC 2004 wSP1 won't work, but w/o SP1, it does??
Anyone managed to get it to run under SP1?  My VPC says it's version 5.3.582.27, which I understand to be the SP1 version... arrgh...

Thanks!!

I'm not 100% positive, but I think I have copies of 2004 without any service pack in my heaps o stuff...  Seeing that they gave it away free, it shouldnt be such a big deal for me to send you a copy... Ill see if I find it..

Fortunately, one of the guys at my company has an MSDN subscription, and was kind enough to download VPC 2004 for me... so, with the software in hand... I'm still not gettin' it to boot...

Since someone here once got it working, do you remember the settings??  I've tried every IDE driver listed, in both "standard" and "alternate" CD settings...

Thanks!!

From what I recall I left it in the secondary position, but I used a real CD... I think it had issues with the image...

Interesing... You are using the BETA disk for the ide, right with the dual PII thing controller?

I actually tried several of the drivers off the beta disk, including the Intel PIIX.  But... you're sure that's the one?  Not the Dual IDE driver??
Also, since VPC lets you go into the BIOS, think any of the BIOS settings matter??

So far, it hasn't made a difference to have or not have the virtual CD-ROM on the Primary controller, so I'll keep it on the primary, as there seems to be more reports of it working that way.

Thanks for the tips!!

Ok, I installed 2004 on my xp box.... sorry for the delay..

Make sure your VPC is build 582 (help about)

I set the following options globally
File Options/performance
-all running virtual machinges get equal CPU time
-Run Virtual PC at maximum speed

Create the VM like this
VM with 16MB of ram

make sure the HD is dynamic and 2048MB

Go into the virtual bios and set:
APM Disabled
ACPI aware NO

I'm using this IDE driver.
Primary/Secondary(DUAL) EIDE and ATAPI Device Controllers (v3.35)

right now my VM is formatting the disk.. so it mounted the CD...  Also I'm using an image, as my DVD drive is in another machine.....

sorry my memory is apparently more fragmented. it was vpc for osx that didn't like the image, but handled the disk without issues.... I think!

It's *STILL* installing... It's SO SLOW!

I'd probably recommend qemu, its a zillion* times faster.

*Ok it's not scientific, but the IDE xfers seem to be going byte by byte.

Where'd you get the v3.35 Dual IDE driver?  My Beta Drivers disk has v4.00-something...

Which OS are you installing?  4.2?

Thanks much!!

Ah, I'm installing NeXTSTEP 3.3.  I found my OS 4.2 disk from the move, but I haven't bothered bring it to work to image it...

I was under the impression that OS 4.2 basically worked on this build of VPC out of the box........

Doesn't seem to be the case... :(
I'd give NS 3.3 a whirl, but don't have a copy...
