Title: WTB: WebObjects 4.x
Post by: ericj on November 07, 2007, 06:17:54 PM
I am looking for WebObjects development and deployment 4.0.x or 4.5.x so I can develop WebObjects Objective-C applications and deploy them on Solaris. Please note that I do not have a Sun, although I am attempting to buy one, so I can't really do any deployment yet (I'm not about to use Windows 2000 as a server).

Also, there have been a few things I've been wondering:

- Does WebObjects 4.x work on Solaris for Intel?
- Does it work on Solaris 10?
- If it doesn't work on Solaris 10, what about 8 or 9?
- How much is it worth now?
- Is it still any good, or is 5.x better (I don't like Java, by the way)?

Anyways, thanks in advance for any answers, but since this was an extremely expensive product in its time ($50,000, wasn't it?), I can understand if you don't want to part with it.

Thanks,
Eric

P.S. Just so you know, I am willing to develop on Windows, but if development on Solaris is possible, I would much prefer doing it on that platform.

It came bundled with OS X server 1.x.  I think that was version 4.  I have it here somewhere I shipped all my stuff to NYC  So I have to unbox...  I also have WebObjects 5 I bought on ebay, and I know it does have the windows 2000 sdk bit's because I've used them..

look on ebay, it usually has them when they turn up.  I paid $40 for my copy of 5.5.

It was 4.0.1 or something that came bundled with OS X Server, but wasn't that version missing Solaris and HP-UX support?

I noticed an auction for version 4.5 on eBay (Buy it Now) for $15, but this is probably a bit low, and I don't know whether it has both a development and deployment license. However, I generally avoid eBay because of horror stories from other people who have tried it.

Thanks,
Eric

Oh, and I want to avoid version 5 at all costs. I hate Java, and I want to be able to develop desktop applications as well (mostly EOF applications, at least until GDL2 matures).

As soon as I find out the version I'll let you know... I'm unclear about the deployment license.. I know it was on the cd sleve.  I recall something about 10 users or someting to that effect for the deployment... I'm pretty sure the solaris was on there too, I know its on the webobjects 5.x boxes..

It's Solaris Sparc though.. 32bit iirc.  And you need Java 1.3

The one eBay auction/buy it now item for WebObjects (version 4.5; don't know whether it is devel or deploy) has ended (someone bought it yesterday). Oh, well.

My OSX 1.0 arrived!

USPS is... so slow!

Ok, anyways, the Webobjects disk is labeled version 4.0.1, and includes the infamous yellow box.

Here is a tree of the CD:

OK, my suspicions are confirmed. No Solaris for bundled version (according to the install guide, it should be in a (CD mount point)/Solaris directory). Thanks, anyways.

Yeah, I must have confused the os support for v4 &5.  Going from my defective memory, I recall that the development was only for OpenSTEP/Windows, and deploy to Solaris/HPUX..

Yeah, that's what I've heard. I do have a Windows 2000 Pro disc, so I could probably do development on there. The one problem is deployment, since I do not (yet) have a SPARC machine. Also, if the documents are correct development was for Mac OS X Server 1.x/PowerPC and Windows NT/x86, and you could deploy to Solaris/SPARC, Windows NT/x86, HP-UX/whatever it ran on then, & Mac OS X Server 1.x/PowerPC.

I just recently purchased WebObjects 3.1 frm Amazon, and it sadly doesn't contain the serial number.

however it does have a Solaris version.

neozeed:

I seem to remember there was some scan of the WebObjects 3.5.1 box and CDs (Part of the Prelude To Rhapsody set) that had the serial key sticker on it floating on Photobucket or some other photo sharing site.

Also, you can reverse-engineer the serial app on NS/OS for what strings it's looking for.

In either case, I believe I have the serial key list for WO 1.0 through 3.5.1. After 4.0.1, Apple switched to a different serial key system. As long as no one has any issues, I can send you that list I have.
