I know a guy that would be willing to trade me a working 66mhz model BeBox for my Turbo NeXTstation Mono (i have a color turbo now...). Worthy trade? I know beBoxen are pretty rare and usually fetch a high price :) Also, he is just like two hours from me so we can meet up to swap the machines.

I've been wanting one for ages.

My NeXT is a Turbo Mono with 64mb of ram, no hdd right now, but I'll add a 2gb with openstep 4.2, all working hardware internally, floppy drive works, N4000 Frogstand CRT thats crisp and bright. Keyboard and mouse. And all cables.

His BeBox is a dual 66mhz tower with BeOS R5 PPC. He is getting it from storage and testing it to make sure it works fine still and I'll get the rest of the specs from him then.

I would trade it.  The NeXT Turbo Mono's are easily enough to come by.  Tell ya what, if you don't want the BeBox, I'll trade you another Mono Turbo system.   I'll even put a 128 megs of ram & a 4 gig drive in it loaded already.

Seriously though, a BeBox can be hard to come by.  And they go for alot more money on Ebay.  Granted, now days most  software compiled for BeOS is designed w/ x86 in mind, they are a pretty cool box.  I run BeOS/Zeta on a couple of systems.  It still a fun OS to mess with.    :P

Yeah, that is what i thought :) he has two so that is why he is willing to part with one. i used to run BeOS R5 exclusively, but havent touched it in years. I guess I'll do that trade once he verifies it works :)

I would also do it no questions. You can still find another Nextstation but BeBox's are getting pretty hard to find.

You do have more than one NeXT system though right?  I mean, if I had to choose between one or the other as my hobby box, I'd go for the NeXT.  Simply for the fact that there's more software available for it and you can throw a cheap x86 box together and run BeOS/Zeta on it.  They even have current ports of Firefox & Thunderbird for BeOS/Zeta for x86.  BeBoxes are cool but I'm sure it'll be quite sometime before you can run Haiku on it.  I know there are some updates past 5.0.3 pro floating around if you can find them, but they were beta & never officially released.

yeah, I have a Turbo color slab. Otherwise, I wouldn't think of getting rid of my NeXT :)

Then I would definately trade the Mono Slab.     It is amazing to watch BeOS boot up on an old box so fast.  I started messing w/ BeOS/Zeta again last year.  I built an older 700 Mhz Celeron box for it.  It screems on that. hehe.   It even handles play DVD's fine.  Anyway, time for me to go do some work.  Take care.

Dont even think twice, just grab it before he changes his mind.  NeXT systems are much easier to find than BeBoxes, at least in my experience.

I say, Yes do the trade!

Not to jack your thread or anything but...

I have a Daystar Digital Genesis 720+ Quad Core PPC Machine that I have been toying with the idea of running BeOS on, as I am told that v4.5 or 5.0 should use all 4 of the processors.

I have downloaded the (ISO?) disk images on my OS X machine but really have no idea what to do with them from there to get them on to the Genesis being the non-programmer type Mac user snob that I am...   :)

I guess the best thing for me to do is start a new thread in the appropriate place and ask for some help...

get an OSX program that'll properly burn ISO images to a cd. then it should be an easy process to get them to install on the daystar... also, NICE machine! lucky :P

Helf, just remember that if/when you decide you don't want it & you're dying for another Mono Turbo system, I offered mine as a fair trade.  8)  Hehe.  Take care

Semi update. Guy it going to test out the boxes this weekend. I won't be able to finish setting up my NeXT for the trade until next weekend. He told me this a bit ago...

<snip>
(Friend) the serial numbers don't tell me much
(Friend) *but*
(Friend) based  off other evidence
(Friend) the dark one is by far the older one
(Friend) to put it another way
(Friend) the light one has an FCC Class A approval
(Friend) the other is marked as "Not yet approved by the FCC"

Guess which one I'm picking for the trade ;)

Helf,
You're package will be going out today.  That should make it easier to get that Turbo going.  Sorry, I got home late Friday & ended up working all weekend.
