I just got openstep on my Dell Latitude XPi. The Latitude has no CD drive, and me, minus the PCMCIA SCSI adapter NeXT supportes it took some time. If anyone would like some info on how to install Openstep on a notebook without a built in CD drive, I would be happy to post some info.

But anyways the XPi uses a NeoMagic Magic Graph video card. I installed the driver found here. It is running at 800x600 16 bit, but there is a white stripe a couple cm wide at the bottom of the screen. Is there any way to rid of this stripe.
Thanks

I would love to get some more details on how you have done this, as I am sure others in here would be as well.

On a related note, which PCMCIA SCSI adapters are supported by NS/OS, as combining this with Juddy's bootfloppy cd's would allow installs on laptops without floppy drives.

Usually these 'stripes' are memory issues... try reducing your bit depth, or the ammount of preconfigured video ram.

You may also have bad video ram.......

Reduce video ram?! I only have 800kb of it. lol
but really, how would i go about that? Seems complicated

back to the install, i not sure of the exact models of PCMCIA scsi cards supported, and i haven't been able to get a copy of the boot cd's, but i know only a handful are supported. Therefore it took me weeks to figure out this method.

What i did was (1) i took the HDD out of the laptop, attached it to one of those cheap $15 USB adapters. (2) Installed VMware Workstation on my late model XP machine (VMware MUST be version 4.x.x nothing above) this is down loadable at the their site with a free sign up. (3) I created a new VM in VMware making the disk the laptop HDD

This is where i got stuck for some time.
When the disk is added it shows up as SCSI. Next does not support the SCSI adapter VMware uses. Unfortunately this cannot be changed in VMware, but it can in wordpad!

(4) Remove the disk from the VM, close VMware. (5) I then opened the HDD VM file with wordpad. (6) I then changed "buslogic" to "ide", save then close. (7) I then added the HDD again, and it's IDE. Now we can go on the familiar ground. (8) Install OpenStep with the appropriate drivers and disks.

Now since my dell has no CD drive if i put the HDD back it would not boot up, because it would be looking for the nonexistent CD.

(9) So still in VMware i had to painfully navigate with the jerky mouse to the configure.app. I clicked on the ? tab, removed the "primary/secondary (DUAL)" IDE driver and without restarting added the "IDE Disk" driver. Save, then shut down the VM. (10) Removed the HDD from the adapter, put it back in the laptop and it worked, kind of like that guy's burnt up thinkpad! lol.
