My first exposure to NeXT (and it stuck; I have NeXT 3.3 running in VMWare as I type this) and their futuristic Cubes was while I was working for the United States government at a research laboratory (of the military sort) between 1989 and 1991. (Those of you even passingly familiar with NeXT and their marketing would know that the education/research community was a major target for the NeXT marketeers, both of the original Motorola-based Cubes and the later 486-based Cubes and NeXTStations.)
What's that, you say? An x86-based Cube?
I's seen three of these decidedly rare x86-based Cubes (this research lab's NeXT boxes were concentrated in three buildings; oddly enough, the three x86 Cubes wound up in the same building) and have reason to suspect there may be more. (The lab wasn't doing classified work, and ordered a rather large amount of COTS hardware; the Cubes were all ordered from NeXT Federal; the stations were later ordered from the same source. However, the Cubes were extremely popular with the research brains.) Does anyone else remember spotting the rare Intel-based Cube?

Were they legit NeXT cubes ?
Were they also a single board design?
Color?
ADB?
Either way.. they sound cool.. like the red powerbook g4s..
Aslo.. did you ever run into Tempest spec nextstations?

These were legit Cubes (the same place also had several 040 Cubes). All the Cubes and Stations were purchased directly from NeXT Federal (and all except two were color). I actually *did* run into *one* TEMPESTed (a one-off built by NeXT Federal for consideration for a contract that would in fact later get awarded to Sun) NeXTstation, so *hardening* a station *could* be done.
