In another forum we were talking about the best retro computer and one member posted a photo of his PET 2001. What caught my eye was that he had it sitting on top of a Cube and I could see that just behind the PET there was at least two more cubes and a slab and made note of it when I replied in the thread.
The next thing I know he messages me and is offering me a cube but the best part of all is that he is apparently local. Anyways, I am waiting for him to reply to me request for more photos and answer a bunch of questions I asked. This looks promising and I would be able to pick it up myself.
I have been searching for a good two years now. This is it! My dream is coming true!  :D

By the way, one if the first things I asked was if there an MO drive in the cube being offered.  :P

I am seriously starting to think that luck is just not with me. :(
It turns out that the Highway one I thought of was not one here in Canada but in California. He was offering me a cube with the cables, keyboard and mouse but no monitor, no internal floppy or any promise of an MO drive being included. He then said that I could buy a monitor at Black hole ( ) and he was offering me the cube for 2/3 of what Black hole was offering ( x 2 ). No thank you.

So, here I am...still without a cube.

Just curious: has anyone on list bought a cube from Black Hole, inc. within the last five years? From my experience and from what I've read from others I believe his website is fantasy, especially when it comes to Cubes.

I purchased an empty Cube case from Rob back in 2002.  I saw approximately 200 Slabs in his basement at the time, but not a lot of cubes.  Maybe 10 or 15, IIRC.  Of course, I may have been on the "Slab" side of the Black Hole and just didn't see them.

I still wonder why he just so suddenly stopped responding to orders and emails. Did he die and we never found out about it?

Well I know my day will come. At the very least I called dibs on happyjam64's cube once he is done with it. So far he is the only person in BC that owns a cube.

Nitro-

Wow! Cubes in the double digits in one place is pretty impressive. 200 slabs is also. Of course, since you saw them 6 years ago, he may have sold them all.

Here we go again. >_>
This time I'm trading my trusty old Mac SE with external floppy drive, applefax modem, the owners manual and a blue bag for everything for a cube with unknown specs inside and a grayscale monitor.
We are planning on shipping everything by having me pay for the cube and it's cables and peripherals as well as half the shipping for the SE and he will pay the other half of the shipping cost for the SE and he will cover shipping the monitor.

If this works out, I swear I will be like that one kid on youtube who goes completely insane when he got an N64 for christmas.

Post by: pentium on March 03, 2008, 02:56:11 PM
Uh oh. Trouble.
It looks like we did strike a deal but we are now stuck on debating who is going to pay the shipping and since I currently only have $50 this will call for some serious persuasion.
He is also wanting me to just sell him the mac and forget the cube but seriously, a macintosh SE for a Cube is better than an SE for money.
Grrr, If only I could find another $50.

Yep. Just for the cube, keyboard, mouse and cables.
It's no cheaper than having one shipped from california.

Pentium, just thought i let you know that the shipper might still add a surcharge over and above the shipping fees for something like "custom handling/inspection" charges when it goes over the border.
UPS did that to me even though I had already paid extra fees associated with going to Canada last time I ordered some books. :x

See if SAQ or one of nekochan guys in Washington state will allow you to ship it to them, then pick it up on your next journey over the board.

If you remember, SAQ has no room in his house but I'll guess it will be worth a try to see if I can either ship to another US member or see if anyone is close enough to pick it up.
As for UPS, they have always had a bad reputation. EVERY package they have sent me has had some massive COD (around $40) slapped on it.

you should just ship the cube to point roberts. Whenever i buy off ebay, i send it to tsbshipping.com. it's great, because there is no need for all the long border waits like the truck crossing and peace arch. (also there is cheap(er) gas there).

Rules governments make for all are rarely enforced on themselves.  Common carriers end up holding packages at customs bond and assess duties.  If you use the government service (USPS, CanadaPost) they can rarely be bothered.  I think I've had *one* duty assessed via USPS in 20 years and that didn't include an expensive keyboard.

$4 to receive that is not bad. Then when you bring back over tell customs that it is a drink cooler. :)

Good that u know that!  I stopped using UPS whenever possible.  I always get USPS (regular american mail) as the shipping method for cheap (under 100$) goods despite the fact there is no tracking number.  This way I would only pay a customs inspection fee if and only if the package got inspected by the border.  UPS charges the fee COD even if the package wasn't inspected by customs even if it was included in the fee.
Another time I paid the COD to UPS then UPS sent me a bill after the fact saying I didn't pay and had to go though lots of telephone calls to clear it up.  :x
I envy Americans being able to ship without these customs hassles :)
Title: This could be it you guys! My first cube!
Post by: pentium on March 05, 2008, 06:45:07 PM
I remember one time I paid the shipping fees ($42) and while the package was in the mail UPS refunded me and when the package arrived, I had a COD that was double what the shipping was and what pissed me off even more was that the butch who had the package would only give it to me if I paid the $95 in cash or else I had to go to some warehouse the next day and pay the COD as well as a $10 storage fee.

All that for a freaking Iris Indigo. :P

BTW, I might have secured a person who would pick it up and hold it for me.
If things go really good, I might be offering a spare mono monitor to help cover my shipping costs.

I hope this deal comes through because you certainly shown interest in hte computer.  IMO I think its more important that the next owner of computers like NeXTs goes to people who REALLY appreciate them, not because they were the highest bidders.  The guy I bought my TurboColor from let me buy it over a half dozen other bidders (some offering triple or quadrouple more) simply because he believed i would give the NeXT the best home (which i have).   Your time will come pentium, and you'll be very happy. NeXT computers even have a beautiful aesthetic value just standing still being off  :D

The deal has been made!
I will pack up my SE and ship it off to my friend. When it arrives he will meet up with the guy offering me the cube and they will make the swap and then I will officially own a cube! :D
After that has been done, the system will be boxed up and as soon as I acquire the funds I will send the money to my friend via paypal and he will ship it all to me.
Now to find a box suitable of holding the SE.

Its a bit inconvienent but at least I build up anticipation to use a system I put away months ago.

We stalled. :/

I am insisting that he send me half the shipping cost over paypal but he refuses to send me any money until he sees the SE and he knows that it is not DOA. Instead he will pay me the money AFTER he has the SE (but not before he hands over the cube) and then my friend has to do the work of putting it in his paypal and sending it to me. Grr, why can't this guy send me the money with is paypal?
This means I have to find an additional $20 so I can use every penny I have to ship this darn thing.

Woah. I think I just made a very creepy connection.

The cubes at the Digibarn (http://www.digibarn.com/collections/systems/next-cube/index.html) came from the University of Michigan.
The cube I am getting might possibly of come from the same place.
Okay, so it's a University and chances are that they had several cubes.

This is where it gets freaky.

Bruce Damer, the man who runs the Digibarn and owns those cubes...came from Kamloops.
Guess where I live? yep.

Just in case Fed Ex works like UPS, have some money or a credit card handy so when the package comes in case there were some extra "customs inspection fees".  (as mentioned in other posts)

I only re-mention this point simply because you don't want to have to delay the cube any longer than you have already waited!

FedEx is driving me crazy.
Never in my life have I EVER heard of someone going through so much paperwork to get something shipped than my friend.
The first time Fedex tried to ship it using the wrong service and now it looks like the second time they did ship it but FedEx somehow managed to say the parcel was prepaid without any transaction being made so we have to go through the customs paperwork AGAIN and try to ship this thing a third time.
My god... UPS gouges everyone and FedEx can't even properly ship two boxes across the border (let alone make them leave the freaking state).

That cable is probably for a mono slab.

Uh oh.
I was about to glue the wheel back together when I heard something tumble around inside. After removing the back (BTW, I'm missing a screw) I found that a magnet had fallen off the yoke and had been flying around inside the case.
That's it. It's time for me to make an insurance claim.

EDIT: A few more sad photos.

Does the monitor still work after that?

Can it be repaired like they fix dings in a windscreen? (crazy idea)

I don't know if this monitor still works. It did when it was shipped and it had a bright screen. The cube will arrive either tomorrow or Thursday.

Ok, time to take part in the longest thread in this forum ;-)

I have two ways to nearly eliminate scratches like these. First one is called "Turtle Wax". Turtle Wax is an alcohol based liquid which contains some sort of water absorbing substance. This product is my favorite when I'm driving motorcycle: rubbing the helmet's visor and my BMW's windscreen with that liquid nearly eliminates small scratches. It may be called different in the US or UK but there are lots of similar products around. Note: this is for scratches that are not going too deep!
The second one is -> very clear <- silicon for bathing room mounts or window / glass constructions. Applying this to a deeper scratch does not vanish these scratches but it helps it at least a bit. Note: silicon tends to change color after some years.

Anyway: it's sad what happened to Your display (hoping the cube will arrive in better condition then!). I noticed quite a lot UPS, FedEx or DHL workers handling the loads of their lorries very rude. Those companies do not seem to care very much about their goods...

One other thing, the scratch seems to have a silverish appearance.
Since the scratch is not too deep (I can barely feel it) I'll try turtle wax first. I used to have some but it looks like I'll have to go find some more.

The delivery guy should be tar'ed & feathered!  :P  One of biggest things I worry about when shipping old systems is how they treat the boxes.  One time I purchased an old Performa 580 off Ebay.  That thing got beat up so bad in shipping, the guy I purchased if from ended up having to send me 2 more before I got one that still worked & wasn't cracked/destroyed.  Luckily it was covered under insurance.  Since my Mono monitor died, I still have it.  If you don't get it covered by insurance, I could probably take the guts out the shell, & and let you have it for the cost of shipping when you get back from your trip.  I don't think it'd cost that much to ship any empty monitor shell. :-) Let me know if you're interested.

I'm going to yell at them for insurance today. Wait, I do have a second monitor case back in Ann Arbor. Maybe I could use the insurance money to ship it? The tube is shot but the case is in better shape.

I went with some car polish and my dremel with a felt buffer and after about ten minuets the scratch was nearly gone and all that was left was the deeper stuff that would take forever to remove but the scratch is so light now I doubt I will even notice it.

Okay, a little inside advice if you plan to deal with FedEx... DO NOT talk with a Customer Service Rep.  Asked to be immediately transfered to a C.A.T. member (Customer Advocacy Team).  I've work for FedEx for about six years and deal with this kind of thing often.  None the less, Cust Reps are grabbed off the street, given a script and paid bare min, CAT are annoying, but a bit more diligent.

As far as FedEx, UPS and DHL not being very nice about packages... unfortunately you're correct.  I work at a medium facility and we get about 10 to 12,000 packages in every morning.  You quickly forget that people's prized stuff is in there... it sucks, but that's the reality.

Thats why I use USPS for *everything*. I NEVER have issues with them. Everything I've ever mailed to anyone has gotten there in one piece :)

well, not sending it to London. USPS turns into Parcel Force, which BLOWS. I've had two packages I've sent to a friend *lost* by them.

Same here, when i order things from the States to Canada I have WAY better luck with USPS.  Not only is it cheaper but I only get the custom/inspection fees if the package ACTUALLY got inspected.  Those corporate guys charge no matter what and then through in some "mystery fees" as Pentium so eloquently put it on top of that.

I also got off to a false start.
Because of my short monitor cable I decided to move the board one slot over.
When I turned the system on I heard the fan as well as the really dead drive but nothing on the monitor. After a moment of panic I remembered that you can't just but the board in any slot so I moved it back to it's original slot and tried again. This time the monitor flickered to life however along with the ripple that it has when it's first warming up, the top of the screen seemed be be sagging downwards. That could be either because I didn't properly reinstall the magnet that got dislodged or something else is loose.
I also found out that the system was filled with a lonely 16Mb of ram so it looks like I'll have to dig through my overfilled bags of ram and see if I can come up with sixteen 4Mb simms.

Well I have done the best to improve and repair what I can. I found another magnet flying around inside the monitor and gluing it back in place fixed the sagging picture, the entire system has been cleaned, I have not upgraded to 64Mb of ram and I replaced the dead 380Mb hard drive with a newer (and quieter) 2.1 Gb Seagate drive.
Now all that is left to do is hear from Nitro and see if that paint he has matches the paint he has on his cube (at which point I'll ask to see if he can somehow shop a little of it), install NS 3.3 and get a few other extra pieces of hardware.

I also got a little update.
I have a friend on another forum that is offering me a NeXT Dimension board! He didn't specify how much but by the sounds of it he might be giving it to me for the price of shipping!
Well well, now it looks like I need to find a Soundbox.
