Hey Everyone,
First I'd like to thank all of you in advance for your help, and second I'd like to apologize in advance for knowing less than nothing about this wonderful new toy i've obtained.
I just picked up a Next Cube N1000 with 2 mono monitors.
The machine powers up into the NeXT ROM Monitor 2.5 (V66), tells me is has a MC68040 25 MHz proc, and 16 MB of memory. The extended Self Test, SCSI Test, and System tests are all passed.
Then it issues the boot command: sd
boot sd (0,0,0)
Booting SCSI target 1, LUN 0
and then forever hangs on waiting for drive to come ready...
During all of this it makes some rather interesting knocking and "head sounds" from what I can only assume is the hard drive, not the MO drive as there is nothing loaded into it. It also seems to make the sound like a french police car siren once in awhile.
So, now that I am sure the obvious answer is going to be "Your HD is bad", the question is, can I ressurect this machine? I have no disks of any kind, no MO disks, etc. and I know not a ton about Unix.
I'm willing to spend a little money to get her running, but not a ton. Any advice, tutorials, blogs, other posts, etc that will help me get started will be much appreciated. I really want to have this machine join my desk with my Pismo, G4 Cube, and numerous other Macs.
Mostly I think I want to annoy my wife with yet another machine she doesn't understand why I 'Have to have it".
Thanks
Marc

A software license for the base OS is conveyed with black hardware (but not white) so that isn't a problem. Buy or duplicate the OS media. You are going to need a suitable SCSI disk replacement. Assume the OD is non-functional then your installation possibilities are:
- SCSI CD with 2048-byte sectors (or is it 512?) if you have the right ROM.
- SCSI Floppy + SCSI CD
- Network install using bootp
- Disk clone
So the path you take is partly dictated by the hardware you have and the amount of money and time you want to spend to hunt things down.
