I love my turbo slab except for one thing. its kind of loud.
I think the first thing I'll do is install a modern, "silent" fan. Does anybody have a slab they can get into easily to check either size and/or the cfm rating or the brand and model #?
That leaves the noise making to the hard disk. are there any really quiet smallish (1-4 gig) SCSI disks out there? What other options do I have? SCSI to IDE adapter? CF?

A NeXT with an SSD?
That would be cool. 8)
You didn;t search the forum :D

Dare we ask the price of that :)

omg..
must... not... spend.. tax return...
With the amount of trouble it is just to get a standard old school scsi disk to work in the NeXTs I doubt a SSD would ever work. I don't think it would draw enough power to make the slab look at it.
?
Best place I know of for the high flow Pannasonic NMB-MAT fans is:

I have some fast, quiet 2.2GB Quantum Atlas II drives available. You will need a 68-50pin adapter to use it in your NeXT. PM me if your interested.
The 850MB Quatum Trailblazer drives are usually pretty much silent. Also, putting a little rubber electrical tape under the drives helps to dampen the vibrations.
have you tried it?
No, I don't have the $$ to waste :)
I have one IDE to scsi converter and at the least it has worked in both my powermac 8600 and in my Indigo2 (where it currently resides with a 30Gb hard drive).
Don't they have Compact flash to scsi adapters on ebay? You can find pretty much anything there.
I have another crazy idea to run by everyone. Assuming I had a long enough video cable would there be any harm in putting the slab directly under the desk, in an open back box? The box would be mounted to the underside of the desk. I would build it with at least half an inch of free space all around, and would leave a slot on the side for access to the floppy.
My main concern is proper ventilation. As far as I can tell the NeXT draws its air in the rear of the case, pulls it across the mobo, and pushes it out the bottom and across the fins. Am I correct, or does it pull air in somewhere else as well? Does anyone have a reason that it would be bad?

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
In addition to the holes in the rear panel, there are also air ventilation holes along the right side of the Slab at the bottom. I would try to get as much room around the Slab enclosure as possible to keep things from overheating. One other thing to be aware of is that the Slab needs to rest on a flat, solid surface to promote good airflow along the cooling ribs on the bottom. Those ribs help to cool the power supply mounted above them.
Anyone have any experience replacing the NeXTstation fan with a quieter model?
I found a test on the Silenx IXP-54-14 which found that the claimed 32 CFM at 14 dB was actually over 27 dB and only moved 18 CFM. Is this adequate?
Any recommendations?
