Title: When your NeXTStation won't boot - what do you do?
Post by: un on March 22, 2008, 07:02:53 PM
Today I thought I'd persue some work avoidance by "using" my 'station. It starts up and I fiddle with the settings -  I have no mouse ball, so I have to work the mouse by twiddling the roller with my fingers, but the pointer got stuck on the left of the screen and would only move up and down.

So I decided to shut it down and try out my "new" scsi CD ROM instead of the insanely loud external HD I had been looking at.

And it won't boot any more. In fact it does absolutely nothing at all when I push the power key. I tried two different keyboards, unplugging and reattaching the power, detatching and reattaching the monitor. Nothing. With or without the cd drive it doesn't boot. Nothing, zip, nada.

This is a non-turbo, non adb station, does anyone have suggestions on what I should check?  Or is there a way to start it up without the keyboard and monitor (in case the ancient froggy died?)

Thanks

un

Check the battery.
It might be dead.

Um, okay.
What about the fuse in the power supply?

Well the good news is that I got it going again.  But I'm not really sure what the problem was.

I took the PSU apart to find the fuse - it was Ok, I even managed to put it back together again without any bits left over. When I plugged it back in there were no sparks or magic smoke, but also no activity from the 'station.

So I tried taking the battery out (this is something you occasionally had to do to Acorn micros) checked it again (still 3V). When I put it back in the station booted like nothing had happened. I hate it when things work for no apparent reason.

'course now it's trying to boot from the network...

Thanks for all the help Pentium, I really have no idea what was going on.

When my slab fails to boot I start crying!

Seriously though, if it happens again check the contacts in the battery socket.

I've had a NeXT slab do this, a Power Mac 8500 and a Quadra 840av do it, never had an Acorn do it though ;-)

I'm just having lots of fun with two of these: a RISC PC and an Archimedes 410- quite funny and nice machines but strange, too...

:) RISC OS was a great system in it's time, but was sadly neglected by Acorn even before they went bang.  I have (probably) the only A4 laptop in the US, and a late model A7000.  Funny to think that each of the ARM processors in my iPhone would easily best the ARM 3 in the A4 laptop, yet the latter used to run a full desktop system with outline fonts and colours on it's own.

Anyway, I feel better that I'm not the only one who's had this happen! Since my last post, the NeXTStation has been behaving again, and now I'm building up confidence to replace its pitiful 100Mb HD with a 2Gb one so I can run Framemaker again after many years.

RISC OS was great...in fact it still is (from what I've seen of the latest versions - shame that Acorn kind of lost out to the PC and went out of business).

Got an old A3000 sat somewhere in my clutter but without a monitor to hook it up to, it's just gathering dust :(
