Since it's most likely bots, I think we need to change the way you register accounts, if possible. Been seeing more and more spam.. :(

It's a cat and mouse game for sure. Every time we get a rash of spammers I get the fun task of getting on the Internet and looking for a solution, which is not as straightforward as it should be. The original visual confirmation (CAPCHA) that came with the forum software was hacked a long time ago, so I replaced it with one that's more difficult for bots to bypass. I then started getting e-mail complaints (some angry) because legitimate users couldn't get through. I also downloaded a code modification to eliminate Website links and forum signatures until a user has a certain number of posts. However, every time a new version of the forum software is released, I have to manually check to see if any of the modified files were changed in the new release, then modify the new files and test them. To make matters worse, the modified code didn't work out of the box so I had to modify the modified code. :) It's a bit frustrating considering the fact that I didn't write the forum software nor the modification code. But it is free, so I really can't complain.
The current 2.x version of the forum software is at end-of-life. I haven't had time to really look closely at the 3.x version, but if the registration security hasn't been properly addressed then I may look at different forum software.
While I do enjoy messing with the spammers (can I get fries with that?) I gotta agree on this.
