Okay. Uh, wow.

I had a chance to take a look at a friend's 5.6 system today. Even though I've got a Mac Pro sitting at home, I'd love to be able to run 1.2v3 on a laptop (it's quite the OS, miles ahead of DR2).

So.

What's the top config for a 5.6/OS X Server 1.2v3 system?

Would this be a Wallstreet, 14.1", 300mhz, 512MB RAM, and presumably a "large" EIDE disk (20GB?)?

Does 5.6 accept and run with the G4/500mhz upgrade installed in a WS? Or is that out of the question (if the "upgrade" requires an "enabler" to activate and run at fullspeed)...

Cheers;
-DN

That question has been coveredin many places, I am currently setting up a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet, 300 MHz with 256 MB of memory and a 60 GB hard drive. So far it has run great (this is the largest hard drive I've attempted to run Rhapsody 5.6 on in a Wallstreet).

Out of curiosity I pulled apart my original Wallstreet which has a G4/500 upgrade and 512 MB of memory, and put a spare drive in it that already had Rhapsody 5.6 installed. Once I selected the right partition in the System Disk, the system started right up using the G4. I don't know how it'll work long term, but for the 20 minutes I checked it seemed okay.

As just running it doesn't exactly tell us anything, I installed Quake II on both PowerBooks and compared them... with the video set to 1024x768 for both systems, the G3/300 clocked 19.36 fps while the G4/500 clocked 35.83 fps.

Now, is it worth it?

Beyond bragging rights of having the fastest Rhapsody 5.6 laptop in use in the world (which would include at best less than a half dozen people), I really can't see the point.

I do graphic design, web pages and some page layout with my systems, and processor power has never been the primary factor in my productivity... memory has. And I've run Rhapsody 5.6 on PPC604e/180, PPC603e/200, PPC604e/210, PPC604eV/300, G3/266, G3/300, G4/400 and G4/500... and most of my apps didn't feel all that much different between them (except for the games  ). Right now nothing runs Rhapsody 5.6 for me better than my 8600/300 because it has two nice 17" displays (which lets me spread out my applications).

hey, racer, do you have any pics of your setup? I find it pretty cool that someone is using rhapsody for work still :)

Sure...

This image is a little old, but it gives a pretty good idea of what the room looks like...

And this is a relatively recent floor plan...

http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shawcomputing.net%2Fracerx%2Fcomputer_area%2Ffloor_plan_2.jpg

It is missing the Wallstreet 300  (I got it last month and only finished replacing the screen last week) and I'm replacing the SGI Indy with an SGI Indigo2 IMPACT in the same place. I'm also considering pulling the PowerMac 8100av as I haven't used it in almost two years now, so it is really just taking up space.

And the main reason that I can still use Rhapsody as much as I do is that Create is able to handle most of the tasks I am still doing (my latest project is being chronicled in this thread (http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=45261)), and the last version of Create for Mac OS X Server 1.x is still pretty close (in feel) to the more current versions for Mac OS X v10.x.

Hey RacerX,
You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd think we're related.     Except your room is a little more organized than mine.     I have a few more systems running NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, quite a few more Sun boxes, and most of my Mac's are running OSX 10.4 or better.  Well, my SE/30 & my Quadra 950 have AU/X 3.1.1 and straight Mac OS 7.1.1 and 8.1 on them.  I broke out an old G3 Mac from storage that I plan on loading OSX Server 1.2v3 on when I get a chance.  I know you love Rhapsody, and I think it's great how many systems you have running it.  I always prefered OPENSTEP over it though.  A personal thing.  I agree completely about Create.  It's a great program.  I've used it on NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP/Rhapsody and OSX.  I noticed that Sparc 2.  Need a the rare WEITEK CPU upgrade/SBUS 64meg ram card?  :D   I still have one Sparc 2 like that not being used.  The WEITEK takes it upto blazing 80Mhz.   It'd speed up Solaris 7 quite a bit.  If you're really interested.  You can have them for shipping cost from NC. :-D  Take care.

Nice, racer :)

kb7sqi : I've been dying to get a machine going with A/UX. Haven't been able to get a compatible mac. Wanna sell the 950? ;)

Damn it, just had three Quadra 650 at my hands today - they went to see the shredder... Sorry.

Helf,  you'd be willing to pay shipping on a Q950? :-D  It's a heavy beast, but a great old Mac.  I'll power it on & get all info what's in it this weekend.  I'll catch you on AIM or shoot you a pm.  I ran a web site on it for years under AUX and OpenBSD.

Jenne, how could you shred them? :-(  That's one of the reason I have so many Macs.  I hate to see them get tossed.  I even still have a lowly 6100/7100 sitting here.  The 6100 was brand new & I paid $10 for it.  The 7100 has a G3.  Paid $25 for it, but had to make 2 trips in a van to take all the software/extra hardware home as well. LOL.  That was a nice find. Back on topic, they won't run NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP/Rhapsody, but the run Mac OS & MkLinux/LinuxPPC ok.  Wow, been years since I booted up MkLinux.  :-)  Still like RacerX's setup.  He's definately the "Rhapsody Guy!"  Take care.

Oh... that is a stack of two SPARCclassics...

http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shawcomputing.net%2Fracerx%2Fcomputer_area%2Fsparc-set.jpg

... but yeah, they are painfully slow using Solaris 7. I would love a SPARCstation 2 for either Solaris 7 or (some day) Solaris 2.4/2.5 (with Solaris OpenStep 1.1 installed). Unfortunately, I'm on a computer diet and can't take in any more systems for another few months. :(

I have a Quadra 700 that has been running A/UX 3.0.1 pretty nicely that I might be willing to let go of. I'd have to make sure it is working (I don't recall if the floppy was working) and I'd need to put a fresh installation of A/UX on it to clean off all my stuff first... but if you are interested I'd be willing to grab it the next time I'm at my storage locker and if it is still in working order maybe I could get it to ya.

As I recall, it has 20 MB of memory, 500 MB hard drive (though it might be 1 GB), and an ethernet adapter to use the built in ethernet port.

Hey RacerX.  Yeah, I see you like the "lunchboxes" also. :-)  I still have my little LX.  It's great small machine, besides being extremely slow.  The Sparc 2 isn't going anywhere.  If/when you want it, I'd be happy to send it your way.  The Quadra 700 makes a real nice AU/X box also.  Helf might want that over my Q950.  It's definately a lighter box for shipping! ;-)   I have to run. :-(  Just got paged w/ a call.  More l8r.  Take care.

hm... I'll have to stew over that one :P I really like the Q950. but shipping will be horrid. kb7sqi, did you ever weigh that thing? :)
