Hopefully I will get myself a NeXT printer soon which misses the papertray (but everything else is provided). While looking around for an exchange tray I found several offerings which could solve my problem.
But: as far as I understood NeXT printer related topics the paper tray seems to be some sort of troublemaker so I would like to know on what I do have to have an eye on before buying an exchange paper tray. Furthermore I would like to know what "special" treatments a NeXT printer needs in order to work correctly and if its possible to upgrade a NeXT printer (maybe more RAM like with old Apple laser printers or whatever).
Is there some sort of comprehensive documentation out there about my questions?

www.channelu.com probably has some of the best info. The host does all the rendering with NeXT printers so there really isn't an upgrade path. When you upgraded the OS, you also got a printer upgrade. Some of the switches (cover open, paper empty) are unreliable. Rollers wear but can be replaced with generic aftermarket substitutes which mostly work (channelu mentions these). There are some problems with these. The replacement feed roller is *too* fast for me and actually causes jams when using manually-fed envelopes. If I hold the envelope back against the roller, it works.
Ah, and using Parallan cables and scsi repeater, I have the color printer working from about 30ft away...

The paper trays interchange with those from the LaserWriter II series.
