Anyone know of a source for connecting a NeXT Turbo color to a VGA monitor?  I've read in the forums that you need some type of converter cable and then it works fine.  What do I need and where do I get it?

Thanks,
Keith

First off, you need to make sure the CRT or LCD you are hooking up to can handle the resolution @ the refresh rate the NeXT pumps out and whether or not it will do SoG (Sync on Green). I only had one CRT out of like 7 that worked.

You can get 13W3 to VGA adapters here.

Do you have all the other hook ups for the NeXT? Y cable/soundbox ?

I have access to many CRTs from our surplus inventory (mostly Dell or Compaq), but I was hoping it would work with a Sony LCD I have.  However, I did not see the monitor I have listed on the Deep Space Cables website, so I'm not sure what I would need to get.

Actually, I'm watching this auction, and thinking about bidding, but there is no monitor.

Can you tell me what I would need from what is in the pictures/description?  Or is there a better/cheaper way to get a color system?  I have three mono slabs, but would really like one color.

Thanks,
Keith

Hi fellow NeXTies!

I got a NEC Multisync 1850 LCD monitor that works perfectly with my NeXTdimension cube. I got a Sun compatible 13w3 to VGA adapter that works also with no problems at all. So don´t go for old CRTs. They only eat up much more current than necessary.

An old site used to keep a list of SOG compatible monitors: http://playstation2-linux.com/
The site seems to be down at the moment, but the Playstation2 VGA cable also required SOG for the monitors.  Here's a link to the copy from the Wayback Machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20070822203628/playstation2-linux.com/sog.php

has many, many connectors, all apparently wired differently for different Sun systems.  Can anyone tell me which specific Sun/VGA adapter works with NeXT color stations?

Thanks!

You should ask info@ute.de for details of the pin layout.

I'm curious about how perfect it is.  Most of the LCDs seem to support only fixed formats and coerce anything not in those formats by pixel replication in either or both dimensions.  And the 1850 doesn't list the NeXT's resolution as supported.  So, are aspect ratios correct and is there no horizontal pixel replication/smearing of text?

LCDs are physically limited to a particular resolution, so yes, anything that doesn't match that resolution has to be scaled by the panel to fit (or the panel may just display the area that the image covers and leave the spare area blank).

I've found that even some cheap-ass LCD monitors can handle an SOG signal, my no-name $100-bargain-of-the-week LCD panel from Fry's works fine with my colour 'station (I also use it with my O2 and Octane).  The image was a little too green at first, but fiddling with the colour settings soon fixed it.

The mode that the 'station uses is not in the list that the monitor supports, but it does a reasonable job of displaying it (scaled a bit).

This thread shows some adapters that work with Black Hardware.

http://www.nextcomputers.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=89

There are other adapters mentioned later in the thread that also work.  I think the one from Monoprice is cheaper too.

Hello Nitro,

Thanks for the information.  The link to the old thread was extremely helpful.  I'll get a converter connector from one of those sources and hopefully all will work with my Sony LCD.

Thanks!

The monitor is capable of 1280x1024. You can use the whole screen with interpolation or rescale it by hand, so that one pixel will correspond to exactly one on screen.
