How to initialize a Jaz drive?

Title: How to initialize a Jaz drive?
Post by: kdbeyer on July 29, 2008, 06:58:16 PM
Hi, I'm having trouble initializing Jaz drives in the NeXT format.  I can initialize them in Mac format on my NeXTStation, but when I try to initialize them in NeXT format it fails right away.  In console it says something about 16 cylinders per group is too many, only 2 per group is allowed.  How can do I initialize Jaz disks in NeXT format?

Thanks,
Keith

Did You choose the right disktab entries?

1 GB:

# Iomega Jaz
#
iomega jaz|iomega jaz 1GB|iomega jaz 1GB G.60|iomega jaz 1GB G.6002/1:\
:ty=removable_rw_scsi:nc#1021:nt#64:ns#32:ss#512:rm#5394:\
:fp#320:bp#0:ng#0:gs#0:ga#0:ao#0:\
:os=sdmach:z0#64:z1#192:\
:pa#0:sa#2045952:ba#8192:fa#1024:ca#8:da#4096:ra#10:oa=time:\
:ia:ta=4.3BSD:aa:

2 GB:

# For a 2GB jaz disk:
jaz2GB|iomega jaz|iomega jaz 2GB|iomega  jaz 2GB Rev E.16:\
:ty=removable_rw_scsi:nc#1911:nt#64:ns#32:ss#512:rm#5394:\
:fp#320:bp#0:ng#0:gs#0:ga#0:ao#0:\
:os=sdmach:z0#64:z1#192:\
:pa#0:sa#3915280:ba#8192:fa#1024:ca#8:da#4096:ra#10:oa=time:\
:ia:ta=4.3BSD:aa:

A Mac pre-formatted Jaz will be recognized as a "magneto-optical" drive and as long as it is formatted in Apple HFS NeXTstep will read and write to it - unformatted Jaz' won't get recognized.
So I suppose Your disktab entries are missing.

Yes, I did not have a disktab entry.  I did not know you had to do this.  I also have a scsi Iomega 250 zip drive and I didn't have to do anything to format zip 250 disks in NeXT format.

Why the difference?

I have a 2GB drive and both 1GB and 2GB disks, so I assume I need to put both entries in the disktab file.  I will give that a try.

Thanks,
Keith

I don´t know the problem in detail, but I think it has something to do with the different block sizes of a storage media and the access speed - both differ from regular harddisks I suppose (not sure about this).

By the way: don´t forget to transfer these disktab entries from Your harddisk to that Jaz after You initialized it and gave it a NS 3.3 or OS 4.2!

OK, I copied and pasted the text you posted into the disktab file, then rebooted.

I then took a 1GB Jaz disk in mac format and put it into the drive.  I could read/write to that disk on the NeXTStation.

However, when I tried to initialize the disk in Next format, it did not work.  Here is the listing I got on the console:

Any thoughts on what is wrong?

Thanks,
Keith

Hmm, it's a bit confusing. The log says a 1 GB Jaz is mounted but the disk label is 2 GB Jaz... Are You sure it's a 2 GB -> drive <- and not a 1 GB? They look very similar...

Anyway, try this: shut down the NeXT machine, connect the Jaz drive (2 GB drive please), power that one up, insert a media, power up the NeXT and try again. Also make sure not to use a 1 GB media in a 2 GB drive and other way around!

Otherwise check over and over again if the Jaz drive ist terminated (must be "on") and set the drive's ID to 6. Retry the initialization.

Get another 2 GB media.

I will check my disktab entry tomorrow to see if I have some differences.

OK,

That worked for a 2GB Jaz disk.  I was able to initialize it.  The only thing that I really changed was setting the device to 6 (I had it at 3 because I also have a zip 250 which can only be set to 5 or 6.)

However, it still did not work on a 1GB Jaz disk.  I still got errors.

Just to be clear, I copied and pasted both the disktab entries for 1GB and 2GB Jaz disks that you posted above.  I assume that was correct, that I want both entries?

Thanks for all your help.  At least now I can get the 2GB disks working!  :)

No need for thank you's , that's what this forum is meant for ;-)

Anyway, I don't own a 1 GB drive so I can't tell you if these two entries work together the same time. Maybe I'm going to try this: two entries at the same time.

Have a look at this one:

Anyway, I do not have the two Jaz entry, just one for the 2 GB. Will try later.

Actually, I tried that disktab entry before you posted yours, and it did not work.  I have a 2GB Jaz drive and both 2GB and 1GB Jaz disks.  So I was thinking/hoping to get both disk sizes to work, but so far only the 2 GB disks seem to work in terms of formatting to NeXT system and using Build Disk to make it bootable.  I can format either size disk to Mac on the NeXTstation.

It's not a big deal, since I have 10 disks of each size.  Got them in a single lot on E-bay.  I don't really see a need for more than 3 or 4 disks for my purposes, so I am well-supplied.

Thanks!
Keith
