Title: OpenSTEP 4.2 Installation on Parallels 5584 Problems...
Post by: spetznatz on August 07, 2008, 05:35:59 AM
I'm following EricTheHack's instructions for installing OpenStep 4.2, but I'm running into problems...

Parallels 5584 - the latest version, I think.

Installation proceeds as it should ... (I missed the opportunity to type '-v' at the prompt, but it didn't seem to cause any problems...)

Installation proceeded as expected, but it booted into a plain grey screen...

Now,

Do I have to wait any specific length of time before the Workspace Manager appears?

Or was it my choice of display driver during set-up? I chose 'Generic SVGA driver'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

My fault...I should have chosen 'Default VGA Driver'. I have the Workspace Manager now...

Now to set about patching it.

OK, a few bugbears...

1. OpenStep always starts up twice before I get to the Workspace Manager...anyone else get that?

2. I'm always presented with a 'The floppy disk is unreadable' dialog when I start -- whether the FD is connected or not...

I'm now going to try patching it and getting the VESA drivers going...

TIA,

Last Parallels version is 5608, available as a software update from Parallels.

With your version, you should be able to obtain a full screen resolution (w/ patch 4 Vesa driver) and networking (with a NE2000 driver).

I have a 1440x900 resolution in my MBP and a bridge ethernet configuration in Parallels for networking with a statically assigned IP from my local wireless network.

Hope this helps.  G.

Thanks, g...

I've got 1280 x 960 video under Parallels which is nice... my only problem is an intermittent video 'tearing', which I also get in my windows VMs as well...oh, and the mouse capture / release arseache.

Where did you get the network driver from, and are there any instructions for getting it up and running?

TIA,

Tim

You can grab a floppy image to be mounted in Parallels from  here (http://www-teaching.physics.ox.ac.uk/NextStep/NE2K_driver.fdd). Don't forget the .fdd extension when you save it. Use the configure tool to add the network driver from the mounted floppy. It's a beta NE2000 driver, but I haven't seen any issues with it.

The video 'tearing' is strange to me. Try applying the last update for Parallels v3. I assume you are using the VESA VBE 2.0 display driver from the OPENSTEP 4.2 patch 4 to get full screen resolution with color space RGB:888/32.

The mouse capture/release is inevitable as Parallels doesn't install any driver inside OPENSTEP to smooth the transition among OS.

Hope this helps. G.

Thanks, g...

Yes, using the VESA driver and the latest build of Pllels. As well as the video tearing, I get some very erratic mouse behaviour.

Shame, my VMware istallation (with Morgon's mouse driver) works flawlessly -- except I can't get resolutions higher than 1024 x 768, and VMWare can't use the VESA driver for some reason...waaaaahhh!!!!

Why can't it just work?

Yep, the mouse is somewhat erratic sometimes.

A way to minimize it is to open both configure and preferences. Then select a given mouse ppp  resolution in configure for a given mouse acceleration in preferences. The settings apply immediately so you can feel the mouse response.

As a rule of the thumb, less resolution works better with higher mouse acceleration and viceversa. My current settings are 311 ppp and the second mouse acceleration step. However, that might be affected by your mouse preferences in your host operating system. I used to have the highest less one in both mouse acceleration preferences in OSX.

Ah.. thanks, g...will give that a go...

Luckily, I use mouse accel. on slowest settings in both environments.

Cheers,

Tim

Thank you, g!

...that seems to have done the trick -- it's much less 'skittish' now...lowest mouse accel, lowest ppi setting in Configure. I can even use it with my Wacom Intuos...

Fine. On other topics you have raised:

I haven't seen twice startups in my setup. I don't know, but maybe selecting starting up from the HD in Parallels VM config would help.

To avoid the warning of the floppy disk, the best way is to remove it from the hardware you are using for your VM. It seems that the fdd emulation doesn't figure out the difference between not having media and not having non-readable media.

If you have configured your network driver then using NFS is the way to go to share data with your host computer.
