I was chatting with a friend and he pasted this in. Thought you all might find it interesting.

[11:19] <DeadYak> this would amuse you
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:19] <Phaedrus> yak, we had a mono slab working as a production critical cross platform app server until the end of 99
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:19] <DeadYak> Phaedrus: seriously?
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:19] <DeadYak> wow
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:19] <Phaedrus> when we had to decom it because it wasn't y2k compliant
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:20] <coral> "mono slab"?
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:20] <DeadYak> coral: NeXTStation
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:20] <coral> aha
[11:19] <DeadYak> [11:20] <Phaedrus> and we still have somewhere in the range of 1-2k Openstep instances
[11:19] <DeadYak> note this is at Union Bank of Switzerland's IT department
[11:25] <helf> wow

Yeah, I know there were a few places still using OPENSTEP in the banking industry.   Over the years, I've been offered jobs as a SysAdmin.  When I first got out of the AirForce, I almost accepted a few positions, but I didn't care to move to places like Washington DC or Chicago.  I heard most places were using VMWare now. :-)  Makes sense.  Imagine how many Virtual "NeXT" systems you could throw on a modern x86 box under Linux/Mac OSX.

I forget what bank it was used for, but when I worked in outsourcing we had a NeXT whitebox running some middle ware app that spit out reports...

Sadly someone had scooped the CD's so all that was left was the box...

I think it was decomishioned around 2001...  If memory served they went to webobjects, but I didn't have much to do with the client.

Actually I think it was a bank middle ware that some bastard child of AT&T used.... I'm not all that sure, I just recall seeing the screen saver of the next logo..

I wonder if many of the custom apps were redeployed on os X or if the switch to windows was made in the off years.
I wouldn't be to supprized if the Boston police's openstep based system is still in use

In fact there have been many NeXT systems in use over here in Switzerland. My cube for example was used as a local data server for a company called "Migros". Migros is the largest supermarket and food chain operating in Switzerland and parts of France and Germany, too.
My Mono Station acted as a development plattform for a company that dealt with high-end electronics for industry purposes and the Color Station was used within a creative agency that had something to do with streamed multimedia.
You still can find some rather unusual machines over here because Switzerland in general and its universities in special always had great interests in many different systems.

Next week I'm going to pick up two NeXT systems along with printers, an SGI Indy and at last a Apple Network Server "Shiner" in working condition - the last machine I was really looking for. The price? Won't tell ya, it's a shame ;-)

my Cube was a server in Newspaper Publishing house until 2001. They had over 100 Next systems for DTP ...

Jenne congratulations on ANS conquest, as I know how badly you want to get one

Thanks a lot slomac! Indeed it has been a hard and stony way to go to this machine... Compared to this the transport of that 45 kg monster is a pleasure :)

Thanks to You, too! Sure I will enjoy that one, now I got to get myself AIX 4.1.4 or even better 4.1.5. Will the search for that one be as hard as for the box itself? Who knows...
