Hello.
Just returned from a trip where I picked up some hardware. Amongst the machines was a NeXTstation color (not "Turbo" labled"). Dunno, if it´s working or not, almost everything inside is missing. But still there is the mainboard along with the CPU and the ROM chip. Now, what surprises me a bit:
As already mentioned it´s labeled as a standard non-turbo color station, but inside is a turbo station mainboard, a 3.3 v74 ROM and that strange socketed CPU. Question1: was there an upgrade path of NeXT enabling You to exchange boards?
Other question (2): I also got some printed stuff, for example the original third party applications book with the unopened CD inside and a little brochuche listing all NeXT dovotional items with photographs. Is there need of a scan of that brochure? The book is too large to san ;-)

Pyro or Nitro board!?
Strange socketted CPU?
... do tell more.
Here we go (sorry for the dad logo picture...):

As I already said: looks exactly the same like within my Turbo Color - but I do not know how to determine "Nitro" or "pyro".... Sorry.
J
oh, they way you worded the CPU bit made me wonder what it was :P That looks identical to my turbo color...
Jenne/Helf
That may very well be a Turbo Color Board added into the Color case, but it could also be a 25Mhz board w/ the Turbo Chipset. Some of the later 25Mhz systems used the same board, just had the slower CPU on them. These can be upgraded to 128 megs also. :-) I believe Nitro was looking for one of these system boards. Check the forums for the thread.
Take care.

It looks like someone might have swapped in a Color Turbo motherboard. It has the 33Mhz style heat sink (the 25Mhz heat sinks were smaller and glued to the CPU). Is the serial number ABB0028000 or higher? What do the markings on the CPU say? Looks like a great discovery either way, congratulations on finding that one.

I would be happy to accept any scanned NeXT documentation for the NeXTfiles archive. Thanks. 8)
Well, I will have a look at the CPU tomorrow. Anyway, Nitro, if this one is of interest to You afterwards I will reserve it for You. I do not have any real need of it, so I suppose it will be in better hands at Your place.

Remember pictures of it up & running. ;-) LOL. Congrats again on getting your systems. Take care.

Well, I will make some photos tomorrow, too. I've been driving about 1.200 kilometers within the last 24 hours to pick up all machines and get them back to home - now I need some sleep first (and AIX needs some time to get installed ;-) but it works, thanks again a lot to You, kb7sqi - You know what I mean I suppose...). It is in mint conditon, all three keys, nut no documentation, just the packaging, one DAT, one CD, one HD and the floppy. Sad to say it misses any further adapter cards for more HDs... :-(
But it boots!

That's awesome! Glad I could help. Get some rest. I look forward to seeing some pics when you get to it. Take your time. ;-) Trust me I know how it is when you're on a quest for that "certain" system. lol. I've been there before and still have the urge at times. My problem is, I'm running out of space. With all the Sun Boxes, Mac's & "NeXT" systems I have, I have too many. I've been seriously thinking it's time to start downsizing again. Even though I love real hardware, running things virtually sure saves on the $$$ for cooling/electricity. Take care.
I´ve posted some first impressions of the ANS here:
