Hello,
I'm new here and I think this forum is just like the NeXT, amazing :-)
It's very nice to find a place where people still use those great technologies !
Now, here is my "little" problem :
I bought a NeXTCube (68040 25MHz, 64MB of RAM and a 480MB hard drive) equipped with a NeXTDimension card. So after connecting all the stuff to the big Cube, I try to reinstall the system from my NeXTStep 3.3 CD-Rom (with my original NeXT CD drive 8) ), the installation works as expected and the computer reboots. But then, disaster... I get this messages :

(

Which is very annoying
What am I doing wrong here ? :?
Hmmm, did you try the install again?
I always seem to get random instances when an install fubars itself for no reason.
I tried again and it didn't worked :-/
How can I format the hard drive when booted in safe mode on the CD ?

Well, start by doing what you should do with all old hardware. Reseat all memory, boards and cables. They may have become loose.
Next, the monitor has some basic hardware tests that can be enabled. You must escape to the monitor and enable them. Report here anything unusual.
There are some more extensive tests available on the net. I think they're at channelu.com. But start with the first two.
I checked the cables, all is nicely put together.
As far as tests goes, I enabled some and they went fine the other day, I'll try to enable some more to check.
Don't know if it's linked or anything but my Soundbox is emitting crackling noises some times.
are you hooked up to the Dimension board on bootup or the onboard video? You might want to try removing the dimension and seeing if it boots up. Does NeXT automatically work with both video systems at the same time or do you have to set it up first? I've never used a Dimension system. My current desktop system was giving me problems until I realized I had to manually disable the onboard video to get my pci card to work right :/
Hi, fellow european!
You can send me the board to Berlin!
I can put it into my cube and see if it works.
My cube has an NTSC ND board and works fine.
Did you try another slot? Maybe the slot is broken or dusty.
wkr
Hello :-)
The board is good, it was running fine before I try to reinstall it!
I don't have a NeXT screen, I just have a sgi screen hooked up with a 13w3 cable to the NeXTDimension, so I can't pull the card out.
Maybe there is some specific thing to do with the NeXTDimension card to reinstall the system... sadly I didn't really got any software with the Cube nor any informations from the guy who sold me it.
I've seen something here :
http://www.vamp.org/next/nd-faq.txt about some Installer Package for the WindowServer and the NeXTDimension, maybe I'm missing some piece of driver by not running the original install CD :-/
I so wish the dude who sold me the Cube could have got the software with it... who knows, maybe one day I'll have a good surprise :-)
It's been so long since I installed that I don't remember what had to be done. Not much as I recall. But I've captured most of a good boot here plus hand-copied monitor setup. There are errors and unknowns ('???') in it which we can refine into some kind of a useful guide eventually.

/usr/lib/kern_loader/Midi/midi_reloc_2.0
/usr/lib/NextStep/Displays/NeXTdimension.psdrvr/ND_MachDriver_reloc
And the server process:
root 207 0.0 0.8 75.8M 1.05M ? SW 0:01 (NextDimension) -NDSlot 2
How the slot number gets configured and stored I haven't found yet.
The .psdrvr subdirectory will also have 'reloc' and 'NDserver' files.
Good news everyone!
Today I tried with another hard drive (a 4GB Quantum) and all went fine!!!
I'm now exploring again NeXTStep 3.3 :-)
Thanks for your help! :-)
awesome! :) Don't forget to update your system with kb7sqi's packages :P

New update :-D
A few moments after my post, I got a huge panic and the system never booted again... I got a panic after the detection of the Dimension card every time...
So I found a link on a lost FAQ somewhere on the internet (had to search very very hard =>
http://web.archive.org/web/20010415155246/http://www.avalon.net/~tmcintos/NeXTnsFAQ.html). I tried to swap some memory chips and had no display at all, then swaped again and TADA, display! Then I reinstalled (for some reason it was stuck at some point) and the awesome happened: no problem at all!
Funny thing is, before I remove memory on the Dimension, it detected 16MB of RAM, now that I have removed memory, it detecte 16MB of RAM :-D
Thanks for the link ^^ I have to configure NFS to have a link with my G4 now :-)
