Title: Software with bad floppies.
Post by: pentium on September 23, 2008, 09:53:01 PM
It's really grinding my gears.
I can't install Appsoft Image or Cub' X-Window as well a bunch of other software because of files on the disk(s) that have gone bad (the 2.88Mb disks seem to be doing this the most). Is there anyway to override this or tell the package installer to "shut up, read it again and get on with it"?

Backup the floppies first.  If these are 1.44MB floppies (standard 3.5" 1.44MB HD floppies), you can "rawread" them from a Windows/DOS box into a 1.44MB image.

If these are 2.88MB ED floppies,... well, PC-based 2.88MB drives did not gain too much popularity and are harder to find.  Most of the 2.88MB floppy drives I've seen are SCSI-based.

It could be that the drive, and not the diskettes, is the one causing the problem.

My AppSoft Image 1.0.1 disks are also broken, but i have the images of V1.0. (V1.0 = 2 disks, V1.0.1 = 3 disks)
Disks on NeXT can be imaged with DiskcopyII.v0.9, but i'm using this only for the 2,88MB disks. Common 1,44er disks there rawreaded on Wintel PCs.

Cube'X Version 4 and 5 was supplied on CD and the floppy-disk version like 3.0.1 are hostid-dongled, so, no worth to recover.

Can you do a list of all software with broken disks maybe i can help out.

I have the system it was initially installed on. It's a Color slab.

The software that seems damaged is as follows:

-AppSoft Image 1.1 (disk 2 has a problem reading a help file or something like that)
-Cub' X-Window 4.0 (I think it was disk 3 in the Run-Time module set that was bad, I didn't check the others).
-Create by Stone Design (The only disk is bad however the mono slab has it installed on its drive).

I might also have an issue with Executor (some software-based mac emulator that is not as good as Daydream however does not need a ROM box) and that seems to be it.

OK, disk 2 can i supply as diskcopy image. I need disk 1

Cub'X V4 do i own only as CD version, so i could supply a CD image but since V5 is for free, its "senseless".

If you wan't to recover the disk for collecting purposes i can supply one disk V1.1 and 3 disk V2.x

wich version and what for problems? (V1.2.1 as disks and V2 as CD)

I'm assuming that Rawrite will to the trick, right?
*sigh* Now I got to learn how to make it create images. Just making disks took me a week to learn.
Okay, I can supply you with disk 1 for Appsoft Image

For Create, I'll be happy with V 1.1 as I think that is the same version I have now and ss for Exucutor, I have V1.2.1

I guess I can also let Cub' X-window slide if you say that V5 is free but you need to supply a link please.

Yes, please supply us a link.  All I could find on the net was a demo version (15-20 minutes).  I thought I also saw it somewhere else before, but download was too sloooooooow.

Okay, yeah, um I can't seem to figure out how to make Rawrite do the reverse and make images from disks. I can only seem to make disks from images.

Only for 1.44 MB disks. Appsoft Image comes on 2.88, so you have, as stated again and again, diskcopyII v0.9 on the NeXT.

The rawread.exe I am using is just a little above 8K.  A copy of the program is at: http://simplepractices.com/files/rawread.zip

This is for Windows/DOS and only for 1.44MB (HD) diskettes.

Sorry, I have been pretty busy lately and have not been taking the time to read the posts a little better.

Okay, so I'll look for diskcopyII v0.9 (A link might be nice as google is not helping much) and get back to you.

Well now that it is christmas break I have a bit of free time. First off I found out that I made an oo[ps and it's not Disk 2 of my Appsoft Image that is bad but disk 1 and it errors right when installing "Help.store" If someone else has a working copy of the first disk it might be nice of you to image it and send it to those who need it.

As for Cub' X-Window, if you can supply the cd version that only needs a serial, it would be nice as I'm giving up on finding images to fix my set. I have also been unable to see if the floppy dirve is the problem (which I doubt it is as it reads other ED disks fine) as my Color slab had it's drive go tits up and to get at it I would have to dig through my pile of NeXT stuff. I think it's boxed away in the corner under my laser printer.

I'm also happy to say that there is still a working copy of Create on my mono slab however I have no idea if I can dismantle it and try and rebuild the damaged installer.

I have discovered that most if not all the software I have that was on damaged floppies can be found on a third party software cd that I found in the bunch of stuff I got in September.
It includes Create as well as Appsoft Image 1.1 (which if I want I can dismantle the app and replace the damaged files on the disk so I can install of the floppies again).
One thing about most of the software on the disc is that they usually only contain the app, a sample file or two and a readme file but it appears that some of the apps are in fact the full versions and to allow full use (albeit crippled as it will not hook directly into NeXTSTEP) you just have to register (enter in a serial) the software.

Can you try that version of AppSoft Image with your License key? I have a real (buyed) one and Appsoft Image 1.1 forget its key every time. V1.0 works fine.

I'll have to dig it out again sometime tonight but last time I tried it was rejection the key but that might be because I didn't copy the app off the cd.

After copying the app to the drive I can confirm that you can in fact register it so it pretty much is a complete version of Image 1.1....with the exception that you only get the app and nothing else.
