Hi, I just put together an old PC (Pentium II 450mhz) with S3 Trio32/64 PCI video. Works great. 1024x768 in color. No probs. Openstep 4.2.
Question though: the screen dimming function (where screen dims after x minutes) doesn't dim. Moving the dimmer slider in monitor prefs doesn't alter the gamma.
Is this a known limitation of Openstep with most video drivers?
Thank you!

That is odd... I've only used OS4.2 on x86 briefly. It was with a Sony Trinitron CRT and a Matrox MGA 8mb PCI card. Dimming worked fine on it.
well here goes: this is from
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=72253 which is the driver I'm using
QuoteSpecial Features of Driver / Driver Notes:
This driver does not support gamma correction in 16 and 24 bit modes. This results in a somewhat dim screen when using 16 bits per pixel. Also, in these modes the brightness slider in preferences is inoperative.
