Hello, world.
I found an old Compaq ProLinea 486DX2 machine a few days ago and put NS3.3 on it. It's my first time I've ever seen NeXT. It works great except it only runs in 640x480, greyscale (and I don't have a NIC for it). The internal video is supposed to be able to do 1024x768, but I don't think NS supports it and beyond the resolution there's very little information about it in the manual.
The machne only have 16-bt ISA expansion slots (3 of them). Are there any ISA graphics cards (not VESA local bus!) that support NS at a decent resolution at all? It doesn't really have to be colour, I just need more space.
I'd really like to use this machine for NS as it looks quite nice and is from the right-ish period. I could obviously put another motherboard in, but being early 90's Compaq there's nothing standard about it, so it'd end up involving case hacking. I might do that anyways, but it seems like it would make a decent addition to the collection if I added graphics, a 3c509 NIC and one of those soundcards with DSP on it for Music Kit.
I believe OpenStep 4.2 supports more types of hardware (correct me if I'm wrong anyone..)
here is link to all hardware that OpenStep 4.2 supports, and it lists ISA video cards..

I did some digging on comp.sys.next (often forget about usenet) and found what I hope is a suitable card on eBay.de.
let us know if it works. I have a few ISA only motherboards that would be fun to mess with :)

I do hope I win the auction. The machine in question is a rather slim desktop, almost a pizza box Mac or UNIX workstation. It's probably quite low spec for a NeXT machine, but I'm superficial and I just like the way it looks :) It's not a NeXTStation of course, but if I could get it to run NeXT at a decent resolution and find a ISA card with a DSP on it I'd definitely let it live in the same rack as the Sparcstation and Indy...

I have at least one ISA graphics card. Probably a Cirrus logic or C&T one, though might be something else. Untested as I simply don't have any ISA hardware. Yours for a nominal fee of £2 (cover packaging) and the cost of postage. If I fond more than one, you can have them all.
I have a pile of old ISA and PCI cards, so if there's anything else you need...
The auction was sniped at the last second. Forking eBay. Oh well.
Memson - would you care to do some digging and maybe take some pictures? I'd be looking for a NeXT compatible ISA NIC as well. (And a Turtle Beach Pinnacle or Fiji sound card - but I doubt you have one of those just lying about..)
