I have reinstalled my software NJeXTStep 3.3 and still get error message,
localhost> rm -rf /etc/netinfo /etc/hostconfig
localhost> cd /usr/template/client/etc
localhost> cp -rp netinfo /etc
at this point the error message comes up and I am not able to finish entering commands before reboot.
cp: /etc/netinfo/local.nidb/Collection: Permission denied
cp: /etc/netinfo/local.nidb/Transaction: permision denied
cp: /etc/netinfo/local.nidb: Not owner
cp: /netinfo: Notowner

then if this helps at all
localhost>pwd
/usr/template/client/etc

Is there a unix file I need to edit, please be of assistance!

I used this guide (see below) to setup OpenStep 4.2 networking. I have a standard Linksys router configured to use DHCP connected to a cable modem with Comcast.

My Openstep machine asks for a static IP address and the router obliges.  Here are my 'HostManager' settings:

My 'Router' is 192.168.1.1 and my 'Internet Address' is static 192.168.1.160 and the 'BroadCast Address' is 192.168.1.255 (I never fully understood that one!) and the 'NetMask' is 255.255.255.0.

The 'NetInfoManager' part of this process was a bit tedious to setup.

It would help if you tried as root.  Remember when you're making changes to the system configuration, you either need to have sudo installed or make the changes as root. There's no other way around it.  Sorry.  Hope that points you in the right direction.  Take care.

I would suggest trying this in single-user mode since netinfo doesn't like it when its files gets deleted while the daemon is still running.

Shutting down the daemon while up in full multi-user isn't an alternative as then other parts of the system incuding starting new commands will hang.

Not sure what you mean, still a bit new to NeXTStep 3.3 , could you elaborate :?: What is single user mode and how do I go into it?

Title: Corrupt Netinfo?
Post by: drshmooz2001 on October 07, 2008, 09:09:00 PM
I'll keep it brief for now. Computer does what you said at least two different  outcomes though. First will boot to with command ~ will not accept bsd -s at that point, not on my NeXTStation Color right now so cannot give exact output, will do so if you think it might help, two...Can go direct from NeXT prompt itsef and enter bsd -s and although output is different goes down the line with result etc straight to a # prompt, not sure where to go from there. Right now I need to reload software and set up for static ip etc...,...would this make the difference, 'either way' booting into with command~ doesn't work, bsd -s leaves me out of the ball park. Outside of having Turbo Software reformat my hard drive etc, is there some answer to what seems to be a corrupt netinfo file, do you need more details, please specify, wants hardware password, is this my root password...etc?

Once you are in single user mode (the # prompt) you can do the copying you tried before. If the shell can't find cp try /bin/cp instead.

When done with the copying issue "shutdown -r now" on the command line to cleanly shutdown and reboot the system. You should have a clean netinfo and hostconfig after that.

Seem to have everything set just right yet still cannot connect. Everything has been taken care of yet message still reads 'unable to connect: no ip address for host', lets hope this is a small problem, up to now the forum has been infallible, lets solve this

Hi Morgan or ....

Not quite sure what you are referring to, do you mean code entered into the terminal to set up for static ip.

Giving myself a short break, working on repairing printer laser jet 400dpi.
Think I see what your referring to, will give a try in a little while, and then get back to you on it.

I was referring to copying the netinfo template while in single-user mode.

To assign your computer a static IP you have to enter that one and the netmask in /etc/hostconfig.

You might assign a hostname there as well but make sure you create an entry in netinfo for your machine too (under machines). Either use netinfo.app or hostmanager.app for that.

:?: I'm doing it all at the prompt, I am not certain what you are referring to.
Where is netinfo template? and where do I copy it to and how?

The commands you listed in your first post in this thread are the ones for copying the netinfo templates. So if you executed these without failure by now you already have done this.
