Title: How to install NextStep w/o CDRom drive ??

Hello everybody,

I've got a nextstation color, and my HDD is dead.

Because I anticipate that, I recently bought a "new" HDD. A IBM SCSI 4,5 GB DDRS-34560

My problem is simple now: How to install NextStep without CDROM drive ?

I've got floppy to boot, I've got NextStep CDRom, but I don't know how to do.

In my PC, I have an internal SCSI 50 pins (I bought it with new HDD). By this way, I can connect and prepare HDD (partitionning, formating, copy CDRom in a partition).
I can also connect Nextstation in lan, if necessary.

I try to find some help in this forum but I don't find it.

Could you help me or indicate a "howto" to solve my problem.

Thank in advance.

I have a 1.2GB disk image of nextstep 3.3 with apps.  You could always DD it via Linux... (you would lose disk space, as it would only give you 1.2GB of usable space).  I can ftp it to you if you wish (and have an ftp server).

you should be able to make another partition to get at the rest of the drive once you DD'd that image to it.

If you have multiple hard drives, and an external scsi drive enclosure, you can dd the cd onto a hard drive and use it to install.  Have not done this myself, but I know someone here mentioned doing this with a external Jaz drive as well as a hard disk.

The other way, which doesn't involve sneakernet (aka moving drives from one computer to another) is to do a netinstall. You need another next box for that, but a VMware install running NeXTStep provides all the necessary services once it's been set up for that. Check out the System Administration Guide (should be on the ftp server here, it's referenced all over the place in the forum). You can also check the steps I went through to do this on a sparcstation5 in my post in the sparc/hppa section. Still the easiest way to install I reckon, no messing about with horribly unreliable floppies (and floppy drives!) that are so 1980s.
