Title: Setting up Networking with VMWare Fusion on OS X

Hi there. I recently followed the guide at http://software.jonandnic.com/hack/installing-nextstep-33-on-vmware-6/comment-page-1 to install NS 3.3 on VMWare. After the installation I added the custom VM drivers for the display, mouse, sound, and networking (VMXNet). All was well except for networking.

I tried to get networking setup by following http://tntluoma.com/files/TjLs-Cable-Modem-Howto-for-NeXTStep.pdf to no avail. I also found a DHCP package, installed it and tried to follow its guide. No luck there either. My most common problem is after I make some attempt of configuring networking I can't fully reboot .. the OS just hangs somewhere.

I also get messages like this during boot up in verbose mode:

"VMXNet: Can't get configSpace (No Such Device); ABORTING" and then
"_IOProbeDriver: No Such Device, device VMXNet unit 0"

and the OS hangs when trying to "Mount remote filesystems" or "Starting file service daemons:"

Some other information: I have a basic cable modem (dynamic WAN IP address obtained via DHCP?), which is hooked up to my wireless router (LAN IP: 192.168.1.1). VMWare is set for "bridged" networking.

I think my problem is that the driver isn't working, but I'm not 100%. Any thoughts? Thanks for reading this.

Seems to be a problem with my driver and newer versions of VMWare Fusion as I got exact the same problem report from another user with Fusion.

Since I have no access to a Mac and Fusion there is no way for me to check for this error and find a fix for the driver. But maybe someone else is able to.

Sorry, but can't help you there.

Hmm, if you know of where to look in the OS and give you back error messages, I would be glad to do that.

Know of any alternative drivers I could use? Does this work on VMWare workstation for Windows? I'm on VMWare Fusion 2.0 OS X.  I think I still have my 1.0 of Fusion version somewhere, I may try setting it up on 1.0 actually.

Just another note, I'm getting the same kind of hardware error with the AMD network driver that's listed in configure.app.

"AMDPCNet32: Failed to locate Am79C965 chip"
"_IOProbeDriver: No Such Device, device AMDPCnet32NetworkDriver unit 0"

Okay. as long as configure suggests drivers at least the PCI ids are okay. So there seems to be some problem with the PCI system of NS/OS under Fusion as the error you get is issued by one call to the basic PCI system of OS from my driver during startup.

Getting the same error from the AMD driver confirms that as the AMD driver is always loading fine but breaks once data is transferred (starting with VMWare WS 5.5). I'm sorry, but I really have no idea where to start fixing or even locating that bug as it is not related to my driver obviously.

I have running OpenStep under various VMWare version on Linux without any problem with my network driver (Workstation 5.5/6/6.5, Server 1.06/2). Plus one installation under VMWarePlayer 2 on windows. So quite a broad testing basis.

Thank for your reply.

Just wanted to point out that your network driver loads up fine on VMWare Fusion 1.1 on OS X.

I was able to FTP around the rest of my network and visit websites on Omniweb!
