And the best hard drive is?

NeXT Computer, Inc. -> NeXT Black Hardware

Title: And the best hard drive is?

I'd like to ask members what the best hard drives are to use with NEXTSTEP 3.3 and OS 4.2.

Basically what I like to do is avoid messing with disktabs, so I want to put the drive in by NeXT, either Cube or Slab, boot the CD and install the OS.

So if I want to use a larger HD than 2gb, am I going to have to mess about with disktabs, or can I partition it at the installer?.

I have a 2gb Seagate Hawk (ST32430N) at the moment which is painless to use, however it's a bit small, and a nice 4gb drive would be great, or even 9gb or so.

I've used a Seagate Barracuda in the past (ST32550N) and that was fine while it lasted but died on me one day.

So, what are the best drives for NeXT black hardware?, is there one make and type that is better than others IBM, Quantum, Connor, Seagate, Fujitsu.

I recently tried a 'Cuda 18XL in my cube but it didn't seem to like it.  Old hard drives are getting a bit thin on the ground these days as are small capacity drives.  I'd also like to stick with 50 pin if possible.

I used a ST34520N Medalist.  4GB, pretty hot, shows up as a 1.4GB.

The Hawk is a monster!  I used to have one before I gave it away because it was very slow and I didn't have a NeXT.

(edit: I didn't mess with the disktab or anything to get it to show up as 1.4GB.  Obviously, you can take advantage of the entire drive if you'd like to mess with it.)

I used an ST34520N and partitioned into 2x2G partitions.

I got 3 Fujitsu M2934SAU's (50pin) of eBay in the states, I checked    comp.sys.next.hardware and admin and it seems these drives work great with no hassle.

I got 4 IBM DGHS's (50pin), it seems also these drives work, however you have to modify the mode page parameters to turn off SCSI disconnect/connects, it seems our own Andreas has posted to comp.sys.next in the past his experiences carrying out this mod.

Not had time to try them yet, when I do I will post, however it seems getting hold of hard drives for old computers is going to be hard work, I'm going to buy a few more while I have chance.
