Title: FS: NeXT Dimension + Turbo + Books/Mag's - mostly SOLD

Hi folks...  Well, it's finally time to test the waters on this gear:

* NeXT Dimension:  68040 25MHz (#0831)     16MB / 340MB
The cube is in good shape, but the case does show some minor wear.  The ND board was purchased separately.  I've had them both for ~10 yrs.  ND board has all memory slots full - don't recall how much RAM, though.  I never tested the MO - assume it does not work.  Also, I don't have the root pw.

The monitors are the std MegaPixel and a 21" color NeXT (Hitachi) monitor.   Note: the color monitor does have some shielding issues, and parts of the screen will be affected when placed immediately adjacent to another monitor.  I realize that may well defeat the purpose, but maybe some of you out there know how to shield it better.

Software: Concurrence, Omniweb, Quantrix.  I do not have any original media (apps or OS).

* I also have a Turbo slab, 32MB / 1GB Seagate.  It boots up fine, but I
don't have any of the pws for it.  It was a fax server in the late 90s,
hasn't been used since.  I think this (and the cube) both have 3.3.

* NeXT CD-ROM with an original NeXT SCSI cable.  I don't have the original caddy for it.

* NeXT (Addison-Wesley) 6-manual user/dev/sysadmin set (90-91) with firm cardboard enclosure.  The System Admin manual has a 1" tear on the cover (along the spine), all others v. good condition other than some aging.

* Bruce Webster's The NeXT Book.

Looking for $1250 for the lot.  If you want pieces/parts, please make an offer, though naturally priority goes to someone who'll take the whole pkg.   If people want to get together and take different chunks, I am OK with that as well.

I am in Houston, Texas.  (If anyone happens to remember Bifrost Workstations, I was the sales guy/co-owner there.)  Will ship domestic or int'l, but not the monitors unless you really -really- want me to.

Thanks for your time.

Jason

EDIT:  I also stumbled onto the first four (all?) issues of NEXT IN LINE and #12 of the German NEXT TO YOU magazine.  They're included in the $1250, above.

EDIT2:  I've sold the CD-ROM and the SCSI cable.  Thanks to the buyer.

EDIT3:  The Cube, ND board, and color monitor have been sold.  Thanks!
Title: Old Drivers

Hi Jason,
   Welcome to the forums!  Hate to see someone part w/ a NeXT, but I was curious since you worked  @ BitFrost, would you by chance still have any of the old C & T CT655xx drivers for NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP?  I have a couple of old laptops that's use them drivers.  It's been years since I've heard of someone having a copy.  It'd be great to see them available again.  I'm sure it won't take long to get rid of ND cube.  Best of luck.  Take care.  Sorry for thread jacking. :-)

No problem on the thread jack - I saw the laptop driver thread (complete with my dreadful press release - I hated writing those cheesy things!) on another page, but it had been dead for quite some time, so I wasn't going to revive it.

Anyway, the story on the C&T (Tecra 7x0) driver is that you'd need to find Eric Brown.  We paid him to write the driver for us, but since we don't have the company any more you'd want to find him.

Barring that, it was always free for non-commercial use, and since that is pretty much every NEXTSTEP use these days, I don't see a big deal if you're able to locate a copy from someone else on the forum.   If someone out there happens to have Eric's present contact info, feel free to point him to this thread so that he knows it's OK from our side.  (Not that it's been a concern in the past eight years - just to be official!)

Other than that, it's good to know that people still misspell our old company's name.   :)  No worries, we got Bitfrost and Biofrost all the time.

Thanks for the info.  :-)  Sorry for the mispell. lol.  I guess that's what I get when posting so late at night after work. ;-)  I never had any luck getting in touch w/ Eric.  I know he used to work @ SwissBank in Chicago.  Who btw still does use NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP daily!  Mostly on virtual systems under VMWare now.  I heard they have somewhere between 1000-2000 virtual systems going. :-)  It's been a while but I used to get a phone call/email w/ a job offer every other month or so.  Back when I got out of the Air Force, I would've love to land a "NeXT" gig, but since I've been working on Sun Hardware/Software now for so long, I don't think it'd a smart move. lol.  Anyway, thanks again for the info & best of luck w/ selling the Dimension.  BTW, if you start getting the urge again,  check out my web site.  There's plenty of software packages to put your system back to use & Linmag7 has been working hard on bringing php5 to a working state on OPENSTEP.  I even lugged out my old 21" Hitachi monitor last week & have been having fun w/ my TurboColor Slab when I have a chance.   There's lot of great people here on the forums thare are trying to keep the "NeXT" community alive & well!  If you need something else drop me an email.  Take care.

Well then, I guess not.  Time to go test eBay.  (Rob will be listing the gear.)

Sigh. $1250 is a pretty good price for the lot, but I already have a few of them... not sure my wife would appreciate *yet another* cube.

No worries - if she's already let you get more than one, I could not in good conscience encourage you to rock the boat.
Title: eBay?

It's all about timing for me - Normally I'd jump at the chance to get a top-spec Cube, with Dimension board, but with a baby due in six weeks I don't think the wife would let me live! Especially as I just picked up another SGI O2 because it had the 1600sw flatscreen bundled with it and cost the same as buying an adapter to use my existing O2 with my existing 1600sw...sometimes we computer nuts don't do ourselves any favours, do we?

If it goes on eBay, can you post the link here so I can check out the auction?  Depending on the shipping and my cashflow, I might well have a punt at this!

Well, clearly I am going to have to wait for another wave of single NeXT fans.   :)

Given how this lousy economy just seems to crater more each day, presently I am not inclined to list it at all.  (In a perfect world, NeXT demand would remain inelastic!)
Title: bumpity bump bump
Post by: JasonBWI on September 08, 2009, 06:00:09 PM
Wanted to give this a bump, since it's been quite a while.  Only change is that I've looked into shipping internationally, and it's horribly expensive, even without the monitors.  So I can't make int'l shipping work, given there'd be several hundred $ of shipping charges.  As such, domestic only, please.

Also, while I am happy to sell pieces and parts, please do not IM me and offer $300 for the ND board (as happened previously).  It's the jewel of the collection, and if I let it go by itself, it won't be for peanuts.

Sorry for following up my own posts.  But as I note in the edit of my OP, I just found all four issues of NEXT IN LINE magazine, and I will include those for the $1250.
