Title: First impressions NS3.3/Sparc

Thanks to help from kb7sqi I was able to install NEXTSTEP 3.3 on my Sparcstation 20. I've heared a lot on this system, I've even seen a real NeXT at an exhibition in late 80-ties as as schollkid, end even tried OPENSTEP for Solaris for some time, but this is first time I can use the REAL thing.

Overally the system is very impresive - really polished and seamlessly working. Also the graphics optimization on SX is excellent, even compared with original Sun's xserver. However, when comparing with Solaris the pure number-crunching and disk access seams a bit slower. Maybe it's not matter of speed but just a scheduler issue - I've observed, that when a backround task (eg. OmniPDF opening a big document) is running system's responsivity significantly decreases.
For other hand, speed of gui applications is apealing. The whole Lighthouse's suite is so damn fast when compared with OpenOffice (hardly usable) on the same machine !

BTW few questions:

1. Is there an FTP client for NS3.3 with passive support ?
2. How to save link target to disk in OmniWeb 2.7 ?
4. Was anybody able to run Jessycad ? When started in terminal I get an error message about 'NIB section' - I don't remember it exactly. I'll check it when will be at the computer.

Congrats on getting it running. :D   NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP does bring life to the older Sparc's/Gecko's.  The difference in speed is amazing.  I'm sure you'll also find the Lighthouse Design software is also still handy.  Sure, you don't have compatibility w/ the latest Micro$haft Word/Excel, but I'm ok w/ that. ;-)  Depending on how much disk space/ram you have, you might want to go ahead & load up OPENSTEP 4.2.  It's a little slower compared to NEXTSTEP 3.3, but it does let you run some more programs like the never version of OmniWeb, Create 5.2.1, newer versions of ToyViewer, ToyAlbum, RBrowser, Solitaire, WebObjects, etc along w/ all the software you're running on NEXTSTEP 3.3.

For FTP as Andreas stated, you can use YFTP or GatorFTP.  If you install OPENSTEP 4.2, the newer version of RBrowser also works well for FTP & you can even use it it over ssh connections. :-)  I haven't tried Jessycad.  Enjoy the system!  Take care.

I've fiddled a bit with Quantix and it's excellent! I think I'll use NS just to be able to run Quantix.

I'm afraid none of them has passive support...

Just FYI, 99% of all NEXTSTEP programs run fine on OPENSTEP. :-)  There's a few that don't run.  I checked RBrowser.app that works on OPENSTEP & it supports Passive FTP.  The version available for NEXTSTEP doesn't however.  If you don't mind cli, then grab the ncftp package from my web server.  It supports passive ftp also.  Take care.
