OK, my 440BX board has died and I've got a SuperMicro X6DVL-EG2 with dual 3ghz Xeons and 2gb of ram for peanuts, first I need to see if OS will install on it, assuming it does, what options do I have for a PCI sound card, not many of the drivers of the Apple driver page say anything about PCI only ISA, I've been using an AWE64 Gold but the new board obviously does not have an ISA slot only PCI and PCI-e
Cheers

you want to put Openstep on a machine of that caliber? Pickup a used 440BX from ebay.
I've been looking for a dual proc 440BX to replace the one that just went faulty and there are not many about, in fact I didn't see any, I also run BeOS hence the requirement for dual proc.
There's a Soundblaster 16 PCI driver in the archives that might fit your needs. It supports cards with the es1371 chip.

Thanks, is that CT4740?

I don't know if the CT4740 has the es1371 chip. I've been building a white box over the past week and I picked up a sound card for it on eBay. I searched eBay for "es1371" and found a few cards for sale. I haven't tested the driver yet, but I'll report my success or failure when I get OPENSTEP installed.
I was able to get the driver working with the es1371 sound card.
I'd just like to add that es1373-based cards also work with the SoundBlaster 16 PCI driver.
Here's my complete config (HP d530 CMT):
CPU: Pentium 4 2.53 GHz/ 512 kB L2 cache/ 533 MHz bus/ no HT/ socket 478
Chipset: Intel 865G
RAM: 4 x 256 MB PC3200 (only 512 MB detected by OPENSTEP)
SCSI: Adaptec AHA-2940U PCI
CD-ROM: Liteon LTN486S
Boot HD: Maxtor 51024U2 (8063 MB IDE, 2.0 GB partition)
2nd HD: IBM DNES-309170 (8748 MB SCSI, 5 partitions of equal sizes)
Video: Matrox G450 32MB (I added 1280x1024x32bpp @ 85 Hz in the "Expert" panel)
Sound: SoundBlaster 16 PCI (es1373, recognized as es1371)
Network: DEC 21041-based
I finally have sound (output only) on my white box.
Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 128
Model Number: CT5803
Chip: ES1373
it works just fine with the Sound Blaster 16 PCI Driver. AFAICT, the latest version v1.2 of the driver is missing in our NeXT File Archive. download on GitHub:

I placed a copy of the latest driver in the archives along with a readme file, thank you for the link. 8)
I'll have to get one of the ES1373 cards and try it out; I've always used the ES1371 based cards.
