Hey all,

Long story short, once upon a time I was heavily into the NeXT world. During college I acquired a bunch of black boxes, kept a few for myself and sold some to friends and acquaintances.

I virtually bumped into a gentleman that told me he worked for NeXT as an intern and was interested in getting rid of his collection. I ended up buying a NeXT Station from him, some other accessories and a box filled with software. Turns out the NeXT Station was a prototype, the board was non-standard and many of the chips were marked as engineering samples. I ended up flipping the Prototype Station up on eBay but have kept the software all these years....

To be honest I never did much with the software, I popped a few of the floppies in to check them out but I never did get in depth with the diskettes.

There is a set of NeXT Step 3.3 Installation CD's, which are 3 CD's worth.

There are a large number of NeXT Labeled (IE: direct from NeXT) floppies with software, these include:

NeXTStep 2.1 Installation Diskettes (13 Disks)
NeXTStep 2.1 Extensions Demonstration (5 Disks)
NeXTStep 2.1 Developer Set (12 Disks)
NeXTStep SyBase SQL Limited Server 4.1 (2 Disks)
NeXTSTep Allegro CL 3.1 (Franz Inc - 2 Disks)

There is a good amount of 3rd party software on official manufacturers diskettes, these include:

Mathematica 2.0 (2 Disk)
WordPerfect (3 Disks)
Xanthus CraftMan Beta (3 Disks)
Adobe Illustrator v3 (3 disks)
LockScreen
OnDuty (2 Disks)
SoftPC 2.0 (2 Disks)

Lastly, there are a large number of miscellaneous diskettes that either have software package names hand labeled on the label, or a stickie note attached to them with software names:

Maple, Matlab, PacMan, various utils, Graphics Workshop, Questar, Microphone, OTProvide, PhrasePlayer, Questar Users Guide, WP Editing Tips, Music Kit 3.1, Mesa, Presentation Builder, Physics World, Applog, Vacation, Pittsburgh Project, Diagram, Executor, HFS XFER, Rubers, Maple Docs, Safety Net, WaveForm Editor, DefaultMgr, 3D Reality, Xox, Tetris, Pzchalbel.score, Vivoldi.score, TCP_Wrapper, Concurrence, Paste, SQL Buddy, Gravitron, Calculus, PencilMeIn, Unsquash Only, Graphity 0.73, Simon Says, EPS, PaperSight, MailHelper, Tickler, Resample, Media Station, Intercom, LiveAction, Lock 2.01, PasteUp, CDPlayer 0.8, ScreenCast

I only wrote about half the software package names, because I frankly got tired of transcribing them. I don't know if these files are the applications themselves, or the source/developer packages for the software (since the gent was an engineer, I figure both situations are possible).

In total there are more than 120 diskettes and the 3 NeXTStep 3.3 installation CD's.

I have no intention upon getting "rich" selling these, I'd much rather get them into the hands of a collector that will use and archive them.

That said, I am out of work and certainly am hoping to cover my expenses and shipping and the like. If I could get $100 shipped for the package, I would be happy. If that's completely unreasonable please let me know...

Thanks all, it's been super fun reading through the NeXT History and Rare and Collectible forums...

pergamon,

Please let us know what you find once a more complete inventory has been performed.  Very interested to see what kind of hidden treasures you might find.

It would be nice to see some of the software in the "files-section" of this site in the future. Of course only the software that can be distributed legally.

The 2.1 install disks would also be interesting. But sadly there is this "software not decidedly declared as free"-issue.

that's something i've noticed about this vintage computer community compared to others.  People want there stuff to go to a good home rather than the highest bidder.
