how can I change the "root" icon from the white hw to be replaced with a cube icon

ans where can I get a cube icon?

It is pretty straight forward... placing a 48x48 TIFF image in any directory (including the root level of your drive) and labeled ".dir.tiff" will change the default icon for that directory to the new one.

As for a cube icon, I'm sure I have a few that you can pick from (I've got tons of icons)... just let me go dig them up.

I have other question, when I open anydirectory the icon still the same folder icon with a lace closed, but I though if a directory is open the icon may change to a open folder icon, is that rigth ?

Not when opened... when you drag an item onto a directory to drop it in.

Because NeXT couldn't be sure of what previous computer experience people using the system might have had (drag-n-drop was how things were done on the Mac side, but not so much on other platforms) this changing of icons only in the process of dragging and dropping within the workspace manager was meant as a positive feedback for what might have been an unfamiliar operation to some. For Mac users, this was something cool that NeXT systems could do that Macs couldn't.

That alternative icon can also be changed with a TIFF like the main icon, it just needs to be labeled ".opendir.tiff" as I recall (I need to double check that one).

yes, I have Colour in my Cube,  I got a ND   :D
