Hello dear NeXT community.

Glad to witness you still maintain the bliss of this monumental legacy.

For life of me I'm not sure whether this be something I've already wrote somewhere or just left in some draft. Whenever I see those NeXT icons (, I have this warm feeling of wanting to transfer that glory to MS workspace. Both Mac and PC user, and forgive me to say so, but after OS9, Mac (and OS X) has become just a working vehicle (audio) and no longer my favorite desktop place. That is why I use everything else on PC.  In Win3x, shell was a very flexible thing to play with. And there was phenomenal Appman (small program) that was completely offering NeXT look and the very exact icon placement and directions (E.,W.,N., S.)

These days everything seems to be based on docks, even worst then that, one that imitates OS X on PC.  Just a few days ago, I'm enjoying this Linux splendor with Windowmaker :

Could someone please tell me is there anything remotely usable for MS  (XP/WS2003) that would finally voyage me back to home to my cube on MS?  I just want that timeless elegance  and profound simplicity on my desktop. Everything is based on docks,  (yes I'm repeating myself)  and I hate docks!

I hate that I can have this magic on Mac and even on SGI (well, entire Openstep) but not on MS. I need this magic on my Windows desktop! I don't want to install Openstep here. That is a heresy for me.

This is surely the last resort to find some solution, and if you don't know, then nobody knows.

Thank you for your kind assistance

the only thing I can think of is litestep http://www.litestep.net/
But I guess you have to realise MS will never give you the experience you want even if you paste a shell over the poo!!!!!!!!

you can polish a turd but it is still a turd and your rag gets very messy ;)

nothing feels like a next machine.

I've head about Litestep but never grasped relation for this use. Thank you for that note Unixphreak. One problem arrived after Litestep installation: My use of several monitors- 4 to be exact - blocks monitor management program to work at ease with Litestep.

Something I will have to investigate to get better understanding and find the cause.

You can install Cygwin with X, and enjoy WindowMaker - likely across all displays.

I recommend installing the "complete" Cygwin distribution.
