Is there something special about this bracket?
I don't have the actual NeXT floppy disk bracket that lets you install a 2.88mb floppy drive in the cube so I tried both a 5 1/4" to 3 1/2" hard drive and PC floppy driver adapter bracket and they were either too far away from the front for the disk to properly get inserted or were too high for the slot in the bezel and you couldn't insert the disk.
It might be the brackets I'm using but I don't know.
When I get a chance I'll do a technical drawing of the NeXT floppy bracket so that it can be compared to available 5-1/4 to 3-1/2 adapter brackets. I'm guessing that it will be proprietary dimensions, but that's just my opinion. :)
thanks Nitro. If it isn't too hard I should still have access to the necessary metal tools to make one of my own or at least make some sort of chetto metal substitute bracket
Here's a PDF file of the drawing for a 3-1/2" to 5-1/4" NeXTcube floppy bracket:
http://www.nextcomputers.org/webpics/nitro/NeXTcube_Floppy_Bracket/NeXTcube_Floppy_Bracket.pdfThe original NeXT bracket would be somewhat difficult to reproduce, so it was much easier to modify an existing 3-1/2" to 5-1/4" adapter bracket. The PDF drawing shows the critical dimensions between holes to properly locate the drive. I modified the brackets by adding two small .156 [3.96 mm] holes to mount the bracket to the side of the floppy drive.
These two pictures show the top and bottom of the original NeXT bracket:
The next two pictures show the modified brackets mounted to the side of the drive:
The last picture shows the modified brackets and NeXT drive mounted in the drive cage:
The front face of the drive is flush with the front edge of the cage. The adapter brackets I had used smaller mounting screws than the NeXT bracket, so it allowed for a small amount of height adjustment.
I hope that helps.
Thanks for the info Nitro. I'll start adapting a bracket the next time I got some free time.
