Hi, received my wonderful NeXTcube today. Go to start it up, Cube fans come on, Testing System shows on mono screen, then that changes to Loading from disk, and that is where it all ends. System was supposed to boot and run per seller so not sure if hard drive in shipping died or what. I hear the drive inside but other that it sounding like it accesses once in a while, nothing ever boots. I let it stay this way for a good 15 minutes so.
This Cube is a single MO drive unit so NO floppy. It does have external NeXT CD and I do have the NeXTstep 3.x CD.
Is there a way to boot from CD?
Any guidance on what I do at startup to get it to boot from CD would be great.
Or, does this mean I need to buy a floppy drive now for the Cube to install OS again? Surprised the drive would be bad but you never know.
Any guidance on tech tips would be great!

The seller gave me a tip of booting into ROM but maybe I don't have the right command to boot from CD, if that is even an option for a 68040 25MHz Cube with NeXT ROM 2.2 v63 per boot rom page.
I did the right command + ~ at boot and then he told me to type bsd -s
I then get sc:Didn't complete messages endlessly.
Is there a command I use to boot from the NeXTstep 3.2 CD?
I have a terminator on the 2nd port of the NeXT CD unit. What I get is every 15 seconds of so the light on the CD player lights up for 4 seconds or so and then goes out. I hear no CD spin or anything like that.
Anyway, any more tips would be sweet..

Before I could get my cube to boot from the cd I had to locate a NeXT 2.88mb floppy drive and rig it up to work as the older 030 and 040 non-turbo cubes didn't know how to boot from a CD drive.
If you got a second SCSI drive handy you can simply dump the CD to the drive and the cube will then boot from it for installation purposes no problem.
I have her booted. I opened the case, reseated all the cables, pulled out the hard drive (this this is HUGE!!!!!), and re-connected everything. Now she boots.
Maybe shipping jarred something?
So, my front faceplate is the style for 2 MO drives. The top has the HUGE HDD and below is the MO drive. No clue if the MO drives works but I have some media coming my way soon so we will see.
Anyway, I guess I need to buy a floppy anyway if I want to ever re-install OS.
I am happy for tonight. Has been fun playing on NeXTcube!
