Title: How to boot into Console mode?
Post by: NeXTsociety on March 09, 2010, 12:19:58 PM
I want to watch all the things that take place when starting up my NeXTcube.  I have a NeXT Laser Printer that appears not to power up at all so I want to see if any info during boot shows a possible issue.  Not sure what that would be but I want to try and post findings here.

Anyway, I know to do the Command ~ at startup but what command do I now type to boot the system from the stock SCSI internal drive?

Thanks for the verbage I need to type.  I did a search but can't find what command I need.

Thanks

TJ

*And, if you know what I am looking for to confirm Printer port is OK and sending command to printer to turn on, that would be sweet!

EDIT.  OK, I did a command NeXT>b and she does boot but I need it to boot so it keeps this data on the screen so I can look at it.  It goes to quick to the login screen.  I can't really analyze stuff.  Is there some command that I use to do it one return at a time so I can see each line?  Or is there some log that should have this stuff?  I have opened various logs but they have no data.
Title: Admin Guide has the information on startup/shutdown

The complete admin guide is up on channelu.  Startup and shutdown can be found here:  http://www.channelu.com/NeXT/NeXTStep/3.3/nsa/09_StartShut.htmld/index.html.

The entire boot sequence is captured and should be in /usr/adm/messages.  Did you look at this log file?  'np0' is the physical device and should show up during boot.  'lpd'/'printer' is the daemon process that serves it along with psd and some other needed utilities and gets started towards the end of boot.  There are more log files in the /usr/adm area that may be of interest.  Like 'lpd-errs'.

Configuration is through PrinterManager.app which should do useful things if the boot looks good.
