I just tried to install a newer 2GB HD into my NeXTstation, but all it says is waiting for drive.............. It's an Apple SCSI drive from IBM.. does anyone know what drives will work?

Could be a termination or ID issue, as these drives are SCSI.

Verify by the jumpers what SCSI ID the drive is set to, and make sure it is not the same as anything else attached to the system, like a CD drive.  You also want to make sure the ID is lower than any other device, as the system boots from the lowest device first, which is usually the internal drive set at ID=0.  At least that is what I remember.

Termination issues are more common, as in my experience NeXT systems are fairly finicky in this area.  Google up the drive specifications and see which jumpers control whether the drive or the bus does termination, and try the different options to see.  I also have one TurboColor station that will not boot correctly unless the scsi port on the back is terminated, no matter how the internal drive termination is set, or what kind of internal drive it is.  I usually have an external CD attached that provides termination, but if I move it I have to attach just a terminator to the external port so it boots.

What he said.  Time to read up on SCSI and here's a reasonably good source:  http://www.paralan.com/.  I've used their repeaters and cables to create a 30-40 ft single-ended scsi chain that works without any issues.  The other hint is to configure the drive to spin up on power-on.  I don't think the NeXT firmware sends start commands to the drives.
