Title: Does Cube Serial number match the # built?

So, I have a early 68030 Cube that was updated to an 040.  My serial # is AAK0004152.  Just wondering if this serial # means my Cube is one of the 1st 5000 built?  No. 4152 to be exact. Or does serial # have no bearing on what # Cube this is.

Not sure how many Cubes were built but 4152 serial # seems low like a fairly early model.

I'm not sure, but I do know that non-serialized prototypes were built.  At least, my prototype Cube does not have a serial number on the back.  The only sticker on it says "NeXT Computer Prototype 104."

The AAK number is the enclosure number. There is also a motherboard inside, and a PSU, both of which have their own numbers  (AAG for a '030 25MHz motherboards, AAB for the PSU).

AAK enclosures are for the NeXT Computer (originally shipped with a 25MHz '030 m/b). ABA enclosures are for the NeXTcube (originally shipped with a 25MHz or 33MHz '040 m/b). The ABA numbering restarts at low numbers (0000001?).

I own several AAK enclosures, all of which are in the under-5000 range, so your number seems to me to be nothing out of the ordinary.

It might be interesting to compile a database of AAK, ABA, ABB & ABC numbers still out there & for the latter two whether they relate to non-Turbo or Turbo machines. This might give an idea for what the minimum and maximum numbers were in that range, and what the highest ABB & ABC numbers were which related to non-Turbo systems.

I'm curious about this too -- my NeXT cube is numbered AAK0000634

Would that mean it's the six-hundred and thirty-fourth one made?  One of the first thousand?  If so, it seems to me like that would make it a bit more special, more collectable, maybe...

Anyone confirm this for sure?

Going by what Tomaz notes, AAK was for the original 030 Cubes so if they actually # them from 1 to xxxxxxx, then to me, your 600s number is fairly low.  But whom knows.

Email Steve Jobs.  He seems to like emails these days about iPhone and antennas.  heheheh.  Maybe he would like one about the Cube.

I'm pretty sure they started at 0 or 1.  I have AAK0000007.
