I recently revived my OPENSTEP white box and wanted to set it up to use the maximum amount of memory possible. I Googled my arse off trying to find out what the max memory under OPENSTEP is, to no avail. Some of the Google hits pointed back to the forums here, and our forum member Leo has a nice post with information on
how to configure OPENSTEP to utilize more than 512 MB of RAM (
http://www.nextcomputers.org/forums/index.php?topic=1659). He mentioned that 958 MB of RAM is near the max, so I sat down at the keyboard and tried different values at the boot prompt until I found the highest value that worked. If I set the value too high, OPENSTEP rebooted. So, on my machine with 1 GB of installed RAM, the highest value that worked for me was:
maxmem=981167
This is reported as 943.76 MB at boot time, and 959 MB in the Workstation Manager. I used
Leo's instructions (
http://www.nextcomputers.org/forums/index.php?topic=1659) to set this value permanently. Please post here if you've had different results.
