Yes, yet another post from me!

I tried booting both OpenStep 4.0 and 4.2 on my Turbo Color Slab but in both instances I get the following error: (ethernet address X'd out)

CPU MC68040 33 MHz, memory 70 nS
Ethernet address: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
Memory size 16MB

NeXT>bsd(1,0,0)sdmach rootdev=sd1
boot sd(1,0,0)sdmach rootdev=sd1
booting SCSI target 6, lun 0
Waiting for drive to come ready...
Bad version 0x80000000
Bad version 0x8a3
Bad cksum
Bad version 0x0
Bad label

The machine runs NeXTstep 3.3 perfectly well, any thoughts or suggestions?

That is strange.  You did replace your battery right?  Looks like you got some hardware issues there.  When you boot up NEXTSTEP 3.3 does it show your MAC address properly?

Heh... yes I've deliberately X'd out my MAC address, it shows correctly when I boot it up.

I recently replaced my battery with a CR123A & I've just gone through a complete re-install of 3.3 and it worked fine.

I do seem to be having some issues with my soundbox but that didn't effect my ability to install and run 3.3 (the power button is not working as I mentioned on a separate post - any suggestions on how to fix this would be most appreciated)

So I'm a bit perplexed - what would be so different about 4.0 _and_ 4.2.

btw. I wrote out fresh CD's of both 4.0 and 4.2 from my backups so it's not a problem with old or scratched disks.

Are you trying to boot the CDs directly or ?

Are the OS4.2 CDs bootable?

As helf pointed out, the OS 4.2 CD is not directly bootable.  You would need the boot diskettes in order to install OS 4.2.  I was able to make a small hack that would create a bootable CD image (from an image of the original CD) that you can burn to a CDR.

The links do not point to the notes anymore (caused by some changes I made to the blog more than a year ago), but if there's interest, I'll post them up again.

Yeah, that is what I thought. I remembered getting the error when I tried booting my OS4.2 CDs. The boot CDs work great, btw :)

Oh!

I'd assumed that since the NS3.3 CD's were bootable the OS4.x CD's would also be bootable - rather odd since the same CD is bootable on intel.

Thanks for the info.
