I was able to get a complete NeXTstation Color on eBay.
The only thing missing to reinstall NeXTSTEP 3.3 and all my other NeXT software is a CD ROM.
My question now is which CD drives will work with NeXTSTEP 3.3?
Just about any SCSI CDROM you're likely to run across will work.
I have used Toshiba, Sony, and Pioneer devices with success - even 6-Disc changers.
There's quite a bit of info in various FAQs on particular models, SCSI ID concerns, termination, cabling, etc..
I've only had success with an AppleCD 600e. Other Apple SCSI CD drives would work too.
However, you may need to boot from floppy: NeXT machines with old ROMs can't boot directly from CD.
It's a while that I worked with SCSI devices - I only got into those in the first place due to NeXTSTEP on Intel platform. But it's now about 10 years since I did some work on my old Intel based NeXTSTEP system.
The SCSI port on the NeXTstation looks like a SCSI 2 connection. Is that correct?
Also my experience with NeXTSTEP 3.3 on Intel systems taught me that the hardware that works is very limited and you better get only hardware that is proven to work and has good and proven NeXTSTEP drivers. So I would prefer a drive that is known to work on a NeXTstation.
About installing - Yes I know that the installation starts usually from floppy discs and I have the NeXTSTEP 3.3 Academic Bundle that came with boot discs for NeXT and Intel platforms. I just hope those floppies are still good. My experience with 3.5" Floppies isn't the best even after only 2 to 5 years. And these are by now at least 16 years old ...

If the floppies are bad, you can get new images of them from Apple's website:

I have a Yamaha CRW 4416SX CD writer which works fine as a reader. I have a 32x SCSI Toshiba that does not work. I also have a Formac (CD600E?) drive that works fine.
