Is Apple Talk a networking software that can be used with the NeXT? If not, can the two, Apple and NeXT, be connected via a Ethernet Cable to share files?
You can use AppleTalk if you're using an ooold Mac, but it's not worth it, IMO, when you can use NFS and Samba or 'ftp'.
Use a 'crossover' cable directly between the NeXT and the Mac, or just configure the NeXT for your network.
The only times I can see falling back on AppleTalk are:
1. For fun
2. If you don't have a Mac with ethernet
Well, I don't think AppleTalk is that dead yet. As far as I know, my G4 running 10.3.9 still has AppleTalk, and I use it as my primary networking protocol on all my macs.
I still use it a lot. It's a lot easier to setup than an NFS server and it is still supported under Windows 2000 server.
If I use a ethernet crossover cable directly what do I need to do to configure the system so I can share files to print and burn on cd on my G4 Mirror Drive Door. I am using OS 10.4.11 and NeXT Step 3.3. I need to share files specifically from NeXT to Apple, is there more to it than just hooking up the ethernet cable?
