Hey guys.. I think my HD is failing. I got a different trackball, plugged it in tonight and I got errors on the drive. I am running FSCK right now and It's getting Media Errors ... is there anything else I can do?
Good news is that i have a working trackball for the NeXTStation, I let FSCK run all night. I got quite a few media errors! It boots, but it won't let me use workspace manager, something is corrupted. What is the best way to save my Apps? I have 6GB brand new SCSI HD that I won in a raffle, which I am planning on using, it's a Quantum. I'd like to do a fresh install of OS 4.2 on the Quantum and somehow get my apps on to it.
I would start with putting the new hard drive in and a fresh installation of the OS. Then you can connect your current disk as secondary drive to rescue what's on it (and hopefully not corrupted).
I did it that way with the drive that came with my NeXTstation and that wouldn't boot.
It helps to find an external SCSI 2 housing for the secondary drive. You may find those at used computer outlets like Weird Stuff (
http://www.weirdstuff.com/). I found one there for $10 including cable and terminator.
This may or may not be the case with your Quantum, but sayeth the FAQ:

for Quantum drives the following is true: Quantum defines 1MB to be exactly 1.000.000 bytes. So if you are suited best by using 2 partitions on a Quantum Atlas 34300 (4.3GB drive-Quantum size, 4GB+5MB real size)
YMMV, but if you're having issues creating partitions, consider the above
Cool. I'm gonna create 2 partitions on it. I'll work on I this week. Ugh this sucks! How do I manually create partitions with openstep though? I need to keep the partitions under 4 gigs right?
Update: Hell of a struggle to get a working HD in this beast.. most of my drives are broken now. I had a brand new 6gb SCSI drive.. it was broken and my Fujitsu drive .. well Openstep decided my 4gb drive was 53 mb.. and my IBM SCSI drive... well it didn't work either.. lets hope my last drive works!
