Title: NeXTStation Turbo Color won't power start-up
Post by: Gankogui on November 26, 2010, 08:13:02 AM
Hi,

I have just take off from my garage where it stayed for few years, a nextstation turbo color with 21" color screen, sound box and keyboard.

After connecting to power and press power-key on the keyboard, the computer don't start-up and a small noise can be heard from the sound box.

Note that I have changed the battery and nothing change.

Any idea ?
Thanks in advance for any help for fixing.

The battery is the first step.  Now it gets 'interesting.'

It sounds like your machine is trying so it probably isn't the NVRAM/power cycle chip (I have a machine where one is failing).  Try:

1.  Reseating the system PROM and all internal connectors.  I *think* the PROM is socketed.

2.  Remove hard drive to reduce load on the power supply.

Power up and see if you can get to diagnostics screen.

Thanks a lot for your indications.

:D Have done the reseating of everything and the PROM (it is socketed)
Have removed the Hard SCSI Drive, then power-up using the appropriate key on the keyboard. The station powered-up successfully and I can access the PROM monitor windows " NeXT> " ...

:( But, when I put back the hard disk, then again the problem comes back and no way to start-up the machine again. !

Now you have a standard disk/power supply problem.  It's isolated but it can be broken in many ways.  Some places to start:

1.  Inspect power and scsi cables and the drive electronics for problems.  Also look for scsi termination problems.

2.  Put 'bad' drive in another computer and see if it spins up and is recognized.

3.  Put a known-good drive in the nextstation and see how far the boot progresses.

4.  Power supply problems will be harder to diagnose and depend on your skill and equipment.  Basic test is to measure the drive power supply voltage with and without the drive attached.

Apparently it is a Hard drive problem.
I have replaced the original disk (Seagate ST1480N) by another old disk I got (Quantum RZ26L-E).

With this change, the Nextstation can power-start-up normally then hangs later with the message "SCSI Error"

It sounds like I'm facing a compatibility issue with these 2 scsi disks :

1. SEAGATE: ST1480N   426MB 3.5"  SCSI2  SE
2. QUANTUM: RZ26L-E  1050MB 3.5" SCSI2  FAST

Given these characteristics are the disks compatibles for installation in Nextstation Turbo and adequate jumpers setting can solve the problem ?

It should work with some settings.  RZ26 is a DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) drive, generally good stuff.  But you must run it in single-ended mode (SE).  You should also configure for spin-up on power on and you need absolutely correct SCSI bus termination.  Jumpers should allow this.  (That drive is old enough that it may only have single-ended mode - no differential signalling.)
