I was cleaning out my collection a bit the other day and found one Sound Box that was a lot heavier than the others. After looking at it a bit closer, I realized that it's quite different from the normal N4004/N4004A. I have a few photos at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/15578792@N02/sets/72157625478933124/with/5211478977/Some differences:
There are no screws under the rubber pads... the unit is held together by the 19 pin connector screws.
There is the copper flange running around the outside
The plate the speaker is mounted on and the cloth on it, are obviously hand made (still has scribe marks on it).
The board is held in place by 2 metal strips.
There is no part number on the back.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Hello Gavin: Apologies for necroing this thread. I think it may be one of the first actual prototypes for NeXT Soundboxes . Or someone made it using a soundcard from a 4000A Monitor , the date on the soundcard may provide some clues. Do you still have it as I would be interested in it? Best Regards Rob Blessin
I think it was a prototype. It's been passed on to another collector and is in good hands.
